KUALA LUMPUR: Nearly 90 bus “captains” working for RapidKL are being trained to handle a fleet of double-decker buses that will be put into service in the Klang Valley this September.

“This special course for bus captains is conducted by the Rapid Bus Academy, which is equipped with both static as well as dynamic bus simulators to provide the most realistic form of training for thohse navigating our city roads,” said Rapid Bus Sdn Bhd CEO Zulkifli Mohd Yusoff.

“With this comprehensive training, we pledge to deliver a satisfactory level of service for our customers,” he added.

According to the company, which comes under Prasarana Malaysia Bhd, the routes for the fleet of 40 double-deckers have yet to be finalised, and discussions are ongoing with relevant agencies, including local authorities.

“What is certain is that the routes served by these buses are the longer ones that have a high level of demand from commuters,” said Zulkifli in a statement.

A double-decker bus more than doubles the number of passengers that can be carried compared to a single-deck bus.

“This will shorten waiting time for commuters,” said Zulkifli, who is also Prasarana’s group director for the bus division.

With a height of 4.2m, these buses cannot just be driven in any part of town as there are clearance issues such as from overhead wires, bridges, signboards and so on.

What is certain is that these British-made buses from Alexander Dennis Ltd are “inclusive” and designed from the ground up to be universally accessible with the capacity to carry 108 passengers, 25 of whom will be standing.

Rapid Bus also unveiled a concept that could redefine commuting by bus called the Rapid Point.

Created out of decommissioned buses, Rapid Point is intended to uplift the image of the stage bus industry, while at the same time offering an oasis for commuters.

“This is done by creating mobile hubs that are not only air-conditioned, but also come with WiFi, toilets, CCTVs, mini-cafes, as well as information screens at the waiting area.

“By tweaking our old buses and retaining several original accessories, Rapid Point is a concept that can also be quickly transformed into mobile bus stops, thus enhancing the appeal of taking buses,” added Zulkifli.
