Headteacher bans Muslim pupils at four London schools from fasting during Ramadan

Muslim pupils at four London primary schools have been banned from fasting during Ramadan due to fears about their welfare.

The Lion Academy Trust, which runs the schools, notified parents of the move in a letter sent out this week.

The controversial move, set to affect pupils at the trust's four London schools, has been criticised by the Muslim Association of Britain.

Aaron Wright, the acting headteacher of Barclay Primary School in Leyton, wrote in the letter to parents: "We are reliably informed that in Islamic Law, children are not required to fast during Ramadan, only being required to do so when they become adults.

"Previously, we have had a number of children who became ill and children who have fainted or been unable to fully access the school curriculum in their attempts to fast."

The letter continued: "Therefore, since the school policy and Islamic law have the same purpose i.e to safeguard the health and education of the child, the policy of both Barclay Primary School and all schools within the Lion Academy Trust does not allow any children attending the schools to fast."

It added: "Fasting has a significant impact on younger children hence why it is only for adults."

The other schools affected by the policy are Sybourn Primary School in Waltham Forest; Thomas Gamuel Primary School in Walthamstow; and Brook House Primary School in Tottenham.

A spokesman for the Muslim Association of Britain told the Mail: "We believe that there are sufficient and stringent rules within Islam which allow those who are unable to fast, to break fast.

"These rules include those who are medically ill or compromised; or too young or too old to fast.

"However, we believe that this determination should be decided by parents with their children; who can together reach a collective decision whether or not the child can fast.

"MAB ascertains that the final choice of whether or not to fast should be the right of the parents, who should in turn encourage their children to fast without forcing them to do so."

Muslims with health problems or those under certain ages are not obliged to fast during the religious festival, which will begin on June 18.

Hurm..bg aku terpulang masing2 lah.tp aku dr kecik pose,cuaca panas,jalan kaki g sekolah.ok je xda hal.

Pose ni xmenjejaskn kesihatan rasany,bukan aku ckp tp doc cina yg ckp.sbb tahun lps masa mengandung g hospital..so sbb aku mengandung dan kuat makan.lpstu hb darah aku rendah lg,aku tanya doc tu mcmni sy xleh puasa lah kan doc, tp doc perempuan cina tu bgtahu xda alasan,xkn bg kesan utk aku pun kalau aku puasa.so puasa je lah.

Kalau anak2 tu mampu nak puasa, tak kisah...macam anak sedara cik kecik2 lagi diajar puasa..bila dah besar sikit dh boleh berpuasa penuh 1 bulan....

hari2 dorg mmg ada curriculum ke? sekolah rendah.. belum baligh lagi... x wajib pon nk berpuasa... tp kalo belajar berpuasa, apa salahnya... kalo memudaratkan dibolehkan berbuka... senang je... tp kalo malas pon, boleh berbuka juga

ummah tak tau sebab tak pernah pergi oberc...waktu yang panjang memang akan mudarat budak2.....tu je reasonnya.....ummah pikir cikgu british tu hina islam...

Kalau dah panas kering dan lama persis neraka ko gigeh nk puasa lagi ke sis? Masa degree saya ponteng jah puasa 15 hari kerna turpaksa amik kelas maraton..pastu qada jer lah. Elohim yang nilai bukannya umnah suchi meleis.

ummah meleis mana tau situasi sebenar, noks....

kalau ummah meleis tu sendiri yang rasa berpuasa pada musim summer, baru dia tau tinggi rendah

Lapar & dahaga tempoh lama adalah sejenis siksaan. Sebetulnya haram menyiksa atau membinasakan diri. Betul tak.

Mentekedarah banyak tak hengat dunia juga satu bentuk penyiksaan kepada diri.  Maka haramkanlah makan.

Ummah kokesen kafir laknatullah sgt mengambil berat tentang kesejahteraan ummah...namun kakak berasa hairan kenapa tidak diberi makan para gelandangan di negara mereka.....terpancar terik kesyummulan

bebudak kalo tak larat bukak je la...bukan wajib pon kalo tak baligh lagi....

mak pak pon nak training anak pose....training la pelan2...ni anak ader sakit pon nak suh pose ke...

adults pon larik dari uk selama sebulan sb tak larat nak pose 19 jam sehari....ini kan bebudak yang tak diwajibkan berpuasa lagi tuh...

Kelonggaran tu ada.. sebab tu musafir diizinkan tak puasa... sebab zaman nabi nak commute from one place to another sangat panas dan menyiksakan..

Kalau agak2 tak mampu dan memudaratkan tak payah la puasa esp anak2 kecil

Yg sepatutnya ditegaskan ialah solat sejak dr umur 7 tahun. Puasa ni boleh train diorg bila dah besar sikit. Solat tu nak kena jadikan amalan harian, jadi kena mula dr awal.

Kekurangan air boleh merosakkan buah pinggang.

Tapi dengan tidak berpuasa boleh merosakkan ketaqwaan kepada elohim.
