Justo’s arrest doesn’t clear 1MDB, says Ariff Sabri

PETALING JAYA: It’s premature for Prime Minister Najib Razak’s camp to celebrate the arrest of a former PetroSaudi International executive who allegedly leaked information related to the 1MDB scandal, says Raub MP Mohd Ariff Sabri Abdul Aziz in his latest blog posting.
The arrest neither exonerates 1MDB nor absolves PetroSaudi of wrongdoing, he says.
Last Monday, Thai police arrested Swiss national Xavier Justo at his home in Thailand for attempted blackmail and extortion against PetroSaudi, where he was previously employed as an IT executive.
Ariff notes that the arrest has caused “euphoric premature ejaculation of smirk and merrymaking” among the “mindless trolls and mental gnomes who are perhaps on the payroll of Najib’s people.”
But the problem, he says, is that various accounting and auditing firms employed by 1MDB had, at one point or another, “accepted and corroborated the substance of the leaked documents.”
“Many of them saw, got scared and left,” he adds.
He says Justo’s arrest “does not destroy the heart of the matter, which is: Petrosaudi defrauded Malaysians through 1MDB and plunged the nation into a debt of RM46 billion or more.”
Ariff smells something fishy in Justo’s arrest. “This whole incident,” he says, “looks like a contrived effort to dig up some dirt, any dirt, on anybody, maybe even from a plant just to discredit the revelation on 1MDB. The plant then, when arrested, will sing like a canary using scripted lines.”
He notes a press statement from PetroSaudi following the arrest, in which a spokesman for the company said, “We have been the victims of a regrettable crime that has unfortunately been politicised in Malaysia.”
Ariff retorts: “Wrong! The victims are Malaysians. PetroSaudi cheated Malaysians into getting themselves sucked into a debt whirlpool of RM46 billion. And it was all started by PetroSaudi when it conspired to channel more than US$1 billion into an account of one of its conspirators.
“Don’t try to act saintly and innocent.”
Referring to the alleged tampering of documents that Justo was said to have leaked to Sarawak Report, Ariff asks: “Which part was tampered with?”
He notes that an independent body has yet to verify that tampering did occur. “It’s just a suggestion given by a paid investigation team out to discredit the person but will not be able to disturb the substance of the scandal on 1MDB.”
Returning to Najib’s band of supporters, he says, “I see the cyber trolls have congregated at some portals and given mindless comments befitting mental retards. Every one of them says now the people defending 1MDB were telling the truth.
“It is pathetic to see the 1MDB people rushing to use the arrest of an individual to clear itself from the 1MDB scandal. Nothing is cleared yet.”
He says the arrest has caused “confusion and doubts” and encouraged “the village idiots to come out and clean up Najib’s tarnished image.”
But, he adds, “the toilet cleaners can’t clean up Najib anymore. He is too soiled.
“Najib has still got to answer about 1MDB. The arrest of an individual who is of Swiss nationality has done nothing to exonerate anyone.”

Sarawak Report defends PetroSaudi expose, shows proof

Whistle-blower site Sarawak Report has shown proof that the leaked documents from PetroSaudi International were not tampered with at all, as alleged.
Citing the example of a PowerPoint file that was mentioned by cybersecurity firm Protection Group International (PGI), the site said it was actually a PowerPoint presentation by PetroSaudi's legal firm White & Case, to show how US$700 million (RM2.6 billion) could be transferred from the joint venture between the oil and gas company and 1MDB.
It produced the first version of the Powerpoint, created in 2009, with metadata showing it was last handled by "WC users", referring to the law firm.
It then compared the January 17, 2013, version with the metadata showing "xavierj" as the last handler and was referred to by PGI as having been tampered.
"This version of the power point did indeed contain the meta data showing that it had been ‘saved’ by ‘xavier’ in 2013.
"But the PowerPoint itself has been completely unchanged.
"However, there is no evidence whatsoever to substantiate the claim that Justo tampered with or changed the original documents – merely that he opened and copied them," it said, responding to a report in Umno-linked New Straits Times which had quoted PGI. Thai police arrested Xavier Andre Justo, a former director with PetroSaudi, in Koh Samui earlier this week.
Justo was reported to have been paid some RM15 million to leave PetroSaudi and is now accused of asking for more money in an attempt to blackmail the oil company over its deals with 1MDB.
Thai media reported that Justo had denied this.
Justo's arrest was to facilitate investigations into the leak of emails between PetroSaudi and 1MDB, which Putrajaya said were tampered with after initial investigations by PGI.
The pro-government daily quoted an unnamed PGI expert as saying that the leaked documents had been edited so as to paint a negative picture of 1MDB.
1MDB also issued a statement after that saying that some of the leaked emails had been tampered with.
Home Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi was quoted by The Star Online today as saying several Malaysians were behind the alleged tampering of documents and emails taken from PetroSaudi about its deal with 1MDB.
Zahid had also warned The Edge and its owner Datuk Tong Kooi Ong that publishing permits issued to the media group can be revoked over reportage of news concerning 1MDB.
Sarawak Report said the only time any changes was made to the PowerPoint presentation was a day after it was created on September 21, 2009 to add the name of a Jersey company by White & Case.
The site also produced email from White & Case to PetroSaudi to inform the latter about the change. – June 26, 2015.
