Jakarta. Indonesia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has sent an official complaint to Malaysia after an aircraft from the neighboring country accidentally landed on the Indonesian part of Sebatik island in North Kalimantan.
“Yesterday [Tuesday] we sent a protest note to Malaysia for entering and landing on our land without a permit, we also demand an explanation on why this could happen,” said Octavino Alimudin, the director for political and defense agreements at the ministry, on Wednesday.
The Indonesian consulate general in Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia had accepted an apology from Sabah Air Aviation for the incident, the foreign ministry said on Tuesday. It also said the Malaysian deputy ambassador to Indonesia had explained and expressed regrets over the incident during a meeting with officials.
However, Octavino said the Malaysian government has not yet made an official apology.
On Sunday, a Sabah Air helicopter flying Malaysian officials, including Home Affairs Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, landed without a permit on a helipad on Sebatik island, which Malaysia shares with Indonesia.
The helicopter planned to land on the Malaysian part of Sebatik island, but landed on the Indonesian side instead as the underwater Malaysian helipad was submerged at that time.
After realizing the mistake, the pilot immediately took off.
