MERSING, Aug 27, 2015:
A 32-year-old army commando doing his parachute practice was trapped in a tree at the army’s Special Forces Group Iskandar Camp here today. The commando, from Unit 9 of the Royal Malay Regiment (RMD) in Malacca, came down at 3.15pm but his parachute became entangled in the 20-metre high tree. After his efforts to scale down the tree failed, firemen from the Mersing fire station were summoned. A Johor Fire and Rescue Department spokesperson said a seven-man team was immediately despatched to the camp’s training grounds after receiving a distress call at 3.36pm. “Armed forces personnel tried to rescue the victim, but failed due to safety concerns,” said the spokesperson. Firemen used extended ladders to reach the parachutist.
The operation, which started at 5.55pm took about 25 minutes. The commando was uninjured in the incident, but has been sent for further medical observation. The Iskandar Camp here is home to the country’s Special Forces Group (Grup Gerak Khas) regiments, together with the Malaysian Armed Forces 21st and 22nd Commando Regiments.
