Mulai 1 Sept (esok), KL, Putrajaya perintis asingkan sisa pepejal

FROM tomorrow Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya residents will have to separate their wastes and Kepong Baru residents are among those who are ready for it.
They will be joined by the people of six states — Pahang, Johor, Malacca, Negri Sembilan, Perlis and Kedah — as the Solid Waste and Public Cleansing Management Act 2007 comes into force.
The job of getting the message across started in July as a joint effort between community leaders and enforcement officers from the Solid Waste Management and Public Cleanliness Corporation (SWCorp), an agency under the Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government Ministry that is in charge of the waste separation project.
Kepong Parliamentary Constituency Residents’ Representative Council chairman Gulam Ghani Ayoub admitted it had not been easy.
“We’ve joined the officers in their door-to-door efforts and we have even visited houses where people from inside would tell us no one was home,” he said.
Gulam lives in Jalan Antoi Kiri 4, which is known part of the WPKL02 service area, as that also covers Jinjang Selatan and Taman Cuepacs.
The number of landed properties in Kepong Baru alone is estimated at 4,000 and since July, SWCorp officers managed to distribute flyers and friendly reminders on waste separation to 2,000 houses. The officers usually manage to reach out to about 280 houses a day and, to verify receipt, the officers keep a copy of every reminder sent to each house using addresses as a tracking tool. Banners were also put up at community halls and places of worship as well.
Sinniah Visvirnathan, 31, and three other officers are in charge of the service area.
Jalan Helang Residents’ Association chairman Loh Kok Wai said the residents had taken a shine to Sinniah because he was efficient.
“Once, I complained to him that a drain was dirty. That happened at night and by morning, he had solved the problem,” Loh said.
To meet the Sept 1 waste separation deadline, Sinniah and his officers had also distributed leaflets in night and morning markets. They also managed to get a newspaper vendor’s help to slot the leaflets into the newspapers being delivered.
Alam Flora and the residents’ association also organised a gotong-royong on Aug 1 where SWCorp had an exhibition on waste separation at the basketball court in Jalan Antoi 4. People were assured they would not have to get extra bins or use colour-coded plastic bags.
There was also a demonstration on why people should use the green bins issued by Alam Flora. These bins are made to fit the lifting machines on the dump trucks so waste disposal attendants will not have to handle the rubbish by hand. A total of 100 representatives from the RAs, Rukun Tetangga, NGOs and community heads from the surrounding churches, temples and mosques attended the event.
Among those who attended the event were Jalan Antoi Residents’ Association chairman Low Chin Lai, who represents some 450 households. He said about 70% of the members took part in the clean-up.
Low said past experience has taught members that it paid to cooperate when it comes to tackling garbage issue.
“Six years ago, whenever it rained, up to 40 houses would be flooded. This was because the main drains leading the water away from the housing estate were clogged by trash and cooking fat from nearby restaurants. We learned the hard way how rubbish can be a problem if it is not managed well,” said Low.
Reports then told of rats the size of cats and a spike in dengue cases as Aedes mosquitoes where breeding in stagnant water pooling in discarded plastic bags.
Residents banded together to combat the problem. To open the lines of communication, they set up group chats on WhatsApp and even added Sinniah to the groups. This way, if there is a fallen tree or a clogged drain, Sinniah will be immediately notified of the problem.
Meanwhile, Gulam said the challenge now was to tackle mindsets.
As SWCorp chief executive officer Datuk Abd Rahim Md Noor said, it is a simple exercise. All residents have to do is to make sure that only food waste tied up in plastic bags goes into the mobile green bins. Recyclables such as plastics, paper, glass and metals are to be put next to it. If the items are small, they should go in plastic bags. Bulkier items like fridges or furniture can be left in the open. Alam Flora will do the rest following a collection schedule.
“But in spite of this, people are still complaining. They say it’s too much work to separate their trash,” said Gulam.
Among the grumbles are insufficient time. They blame it on a publicity campaign which they say had started late.
“Think of it as getting an invite to a kenduri. So what if the invitation comes late? It’s a matter of whether you want to go or not. It’s up to you to make it work or not,” Gulam said.
SWCorp director for Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya Hazilah Gumri said that from July, officers had engaged with the occupants of 18,085 premises under the corporation’s jurisdiction.

aku dah asing. dah beli tong sampah recyle letak dalam rumah. depa kata kalau bukan hari kutipan letak dulu sampah recycle dalam rumah. masa hari kutipan, letak atas lantai. masalahnya, depa juga kata sampah yang tak diletakkan dalam tong sampah tidak dikutip. letak atas lantai, sampai 3 bag. oleh imagine tak depan rumah dah macam dumpster!!!! &(*&)*&(*(*&(*&.
memang bodoh!!!! aku sound itu hari. aku cakap kalau tak mampu nak sediakan tong recycle untuk setiap rumah, sediakan di hujung jalan. or 2-3 jalan kongsi tempat recycle. jawapan hmmmm aaaa hmmm aaaa hmmmm aaaaa... eh hello kutip sampah or nak manage pasal recycle ni fail, takkan nak pergi sesebuah rumah nak pantau kot. sembang lebih je depa ni.
yang tau nak denda saman punish!!!!!! facility tak disediakan!!!! aku sokong idea recycle. aku dah ready sejak few months ago. tapi depa ni buat benda semua takde perancangan!!!! ade ke suruh letak atas lantai?????? pastu depa jugak kata, sampah luar tong sampah takkan dikutip. what do you expect???? yang kutip bukan pengarah or pegawai. yang kutip kontraktor yang berbangsa asing. depa tu just ikut arahan sampah luar tong sampah takkan dikutip. semak rumah weiiii. kalau kutip pagi dinihari tu ok jugak. ni dah sampai ke petang!

Bagi sisa kitar semula daripada alat permainan seperti kereta mainan, Puan boleh mengasingkan sisa tersebut mengikut jenis, jika tidak boleh, Puan boleh kategorikan sisa tersebut mengikut peratusan jenis bahan mainan tersbut. Contohnya, jika kereta mainan itu sebahagian besar diperbuat dr plastik, Puan letakkan ia dlm bungkusan sisa plastik. Untuk kotak susu, ia dikategorikan sebagai kertas.
