SUNGAI PETANI: A 22-year-old was lured with the promises of a marriage proposal, a cash reward, and numerous valuable items, by her supposed British boyfriend. But there was a catch. The man, known only by his Facebook name Marshal Collins, requested several payments over a four-month period. The girl then convinced her mother, a pharmacy owner, to make the payments. Fifty nine transactions later, the mother and daughter are now RM1.12mil poorer, having fallen victim to an internet scam. Kuala Muda district police chief Assistant Commissioner Md Zukir Md Isa said the 47-year-old woman parted with the money after she was made to believe that her daughter's boyfriend would pay the sum back with numerous valuables.

"The man purportedly wanted to propose to her eldest daughter and pay a cash reward of £200,000 (RM1.27mil), apart from several valuable items such as jewellery, makeup, perfume, and a mobile phone. "But to get the items, they first had to make several payments. The mother made the transactions to nine bank accounts belonging to eight local individuals," he said, adding that the payments were made from June 4 to October 2. Zukir was speaking to reporters after attending a meeting on fighting crime, together with the Residents Representatives Committee from Zone 2 of the Sungai Petani Municipal Council, here today.

Zukir further stated that the whole time, the man had resorted to many tricks, giving excuses such as the need to pay numerous taxes, such as the Goods and Services Tax (GST), for the goods to reach her. "Both mother and daughter only realised they had been duped after he apparently asked for RM1.6mil recently. "The woman lodged a police report last week, and we are investigating the case under Section 420 of the Penal Code," he said. Zukir said several months ago the duo had been brought to the district police headquarters ‎and had been advised to stop entertaining the man's demands, but they ignored the advice.
