1st Japanese domestic passenger jet makes maiden flight

NAGOYA — Japan’s first domestic passenger jet successfully took off and landed on its maiden test flight Wednesday, culminating a decade of development for a program aimed at competing with Brazilian and Canadian rivals in the global market for smaller aircraft.

The Mitsubishi Regional Jet (MRJ)—developed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries—lifted off from the runway at Nagoya airport at 9:35 a.m. and returned at 11 a.m.

The approximately 35-meter-long two-engine aircraft flew smoothly upward into clear skies in central Japan, said AFP journalists at the scene.

The plane marks a new chapter for Japan’s aviation sector, which last built a commercial airliner in 1962—the YS-11 turboprop that was discontinued about a decade later.

The MRJ will seat about 80 passengers and is seen competing with other regional passenger jet manufacturers such as Brazil’s Embraer and Canada’s Bombardier.

Firms in Japan were banned from developing aircraft by US occupiers following its defeat in World War II.

Mitsubishi Heavy, a military contractor, built Japan’s legendary “Zero” World War II fighter jet.

The developer boasts that the MRJ, a fuel-efficient, next-generation aircraft, will offer more passenger comfort with lower operating costs, eyeing the booming regional jet sector.

Nih regional flight, ada MRJ70 (70-seater) & MRJ90 (90-seater). Most tempahan luar negara (majoriti dr US) utk MRJ90. Dah 50 thn Jepun tak wat ketebang, so nih kira baby steps la dulu, derang pun ckp nak establish regional flight baru continue utk saiz yg bsr lebih sbb klu bleh derang nk MRJ be associated as quality brand mcm shinkansen & Toyota.

Spacious Cabin

Greater comfort and space
From the moment you board, you notice a cabin that doesn't feel at all like a regional jet. Class-leading height and width contribute to the bright and airy surroundings. Slim-seat design increases legroom without compromising comfort while the widest economy-class seats and larger overhead bins complete the package for a big-jet feel.

The most comfortable economy class in the sky:

No middle seat, ever
Widest economy seat available
Tallest cabin
Larger overhead bins
Dual class capability in 2/1 layout

No Middle Seat

Less is more
There are two types of jet passengers – those who prefer aisle seats and those who prefer window seats. No one ever chooses the middle, so we chose not to build one. The result is the most comfortable cabin of any single-aisle aircraft flying – regional or not. The advantages of not having a middle seat add up to more space all around.

A Better Window Seat

More elbowroom
More arm room, shoulder room, legroom and head room, too. Wider seats in the MRJ's airy cabin offer the most generous window seat space in its class. Which means your passengers can stretch out in any direction they choose, regardless of their seat assignment.

Larger Overhead Bins

If it flies, it fits
The MRJ's overhead bins can accommodate the maximum-sized carry-on bags currently allowed by airlines—something your passengers will appreciate.
