The protest was organised following rumours that Kedah Umno liaison committee deputy chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah would be appointed as the new Kedah Menteri Besar, replacing Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir.
The rumours, which had spread fast over the last few days following a revolt against Mukhriz Mahathir by a group led by Bashah, gained intensity after Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak had an audience with the state ruler, Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah last Wednesday (Jan 27).
Najib had also met with Kedah Council of Regency chairman Tan Sri Tunku Sallehuddin Sultan Badlishah this morning.
The protest, which took place at 10am today at the Bakar Bata Community Centre here, was mostly attended by local youths in their 20s.
They also displayed banners and placards proclaiming support for Mukhriz, and denouncing Bashah.
The protesters, however, declined to give any interviews.
They left after less than an hour.
