Uni of Copenhagen slashes over 500 jobs.
The Universityof Copenhagen announced on Wednesday that it was cutting 532 jobs as a resultof funding cuts laid out by the government’s budget.
The university saidthat the more than 500 professors, researchers and administrative employees whowill lose their jobs amounts to 7.4 percent of the university’s combinedworkforce.
Of the cuts, 209 employeeswill be fired outright while 323 positions will be either be eliminated orvacated voluntarily.
“It is a huge loss ofknowledge and competencies to lose so many good employees. We have found thelargest portion of the cuts in administration and service in an effort to spareeducation and research as much as possible but it still means that importantsupport functions for students, researchers and educators will disappear or becarried out to a lesser degree,” university rector Ralf Hemmingsen said.
In addition to the jobcuts, the university said that it would take on ten percent fewer Ph.D.students in the upcoming years.
“We are making cuts inthe crucial food chain of research. This will impact Denmark’s researchabilities in five, ten and 20 years,” Hemmingsen said.
The Venstre government’sbudget for 2016 means the the University of Copenhagen, Denmark’s largest withnearly 41,000 students spread across four campuses, will lose out on anestimated 300 million kroner per year, the university said.
The governmentdefended cuts to the budget for upper secondary education and universities byarguing that Denmark already spends more on education per capita than any othernation.
The nation spent fivepercent of its GDP on educational institutions, followed by Norway (4.9 percent)and Iceland (4.5 percent).
