KUALA LUMPUR: The Sultan of Perak has stressed on the importance of English and how its proficiency would empower young Malaysians to access broader opportunities in the job market and be able to compete globally.
Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah (pic) said while Bahasa Malaysia is upheld as the national language, it must also be accepted that English is the world’s lingua franca.
“The opportunity to master the language should not be the privilege of one section of the society and programmes to offer greater exposure of the language to children, especially from lower income families should be taken,” he said.
He said young people who command more than one language had a greater appreciation of different cultures, besides being able to communicate with people from different cultural backgrounds.

“They show greater confidence and are better prepared in engaging with a global society and become citizens of the world.
“Individuals, equipped with the lingua franca of the modern world, will prove to be more employable and function with increased efficacy in the global arena,” Sultan Nazrin said in his speech at St John’s Institution’s academic excellence award ceremony here yesterday.
He made a personal contribution of RM100,000 to his alma mater through the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) fund and announced that the name of the school had been reverted to St John’s Institution from SMK St John.
He said its original name was appreciated by each Johannian (alumni of St John’s Institution) as they felt something valuable was lost when the school’s name was changed.
“They have expressed their wish for the previous name to be maintained.
Alhamdullilah, it has received a positive response.
“On behalf of Johannians, I thank the minister (Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid) and the Education Ministry for agreeing to this request,” said Sultan Nazrin, who studied in the school from 1969 to 1970.
Mahdzir, who was also present, said the name reversion took effect yesterday.
School principal Dr Puvanendran V. Maruthavanar described it as an honour for the 112-year-old school and that a resolution to request for the reversion was passed during the PTA AGM two months ago.
Among the notable Johannians are Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and his brother Datuk Seri Nazir Razak, Defence Minister Datuk Seri Hishamuddin Hussein and outgoing Bank Negara Governor Tan Sri Dr Zeti Akhtar Aziz.
