Malacca tourist police to have more bite

MALACCA: Malacca’s famed tourist police unit will have more bite with added personnel and equipment.
State police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Ramli Din said a proposal had been submitted to Bukit Aman to upgrade the unit to enable it to cover more tourist hotspots.
He said the Tourist Police Unit building at Banda Hilir will be also upgraded.
The unit, set up about two decades ago, has only 10 personnel.
Besides normal patrols, he said the tourist police unit will also have its own mounted unit.
“With 15.7 million tourists coming to the state, we need to beef up the unit to provide better services,’’ DCP Ramli said in an interview yesterday.
He said more personnel at tourist hotspots will also help check snatch thefts which he said was a major concern in the state, adding that these incidents could mar the Unesco Heritage City’s reputation as a safe haven for tourists.
DCP Ramli said snatch thefts were still a concern to the police.
