A BRIGHT IDEABy increasing the reflectivity of the moon, the world can experience brighter nights and decrease the need to use electric lighting in the hours after sunset.

The fact is the moon has a very low albedo (sunlight reflection) rate of 0.12. Despite this, the moon’s surface does indeed reflect sunlight. What if this capability could be improved? Nobody has ever considered the possibility that transforming even a small area of the face of the moon could mean an increase in sunlight reflected towards Earth at night. If the process occurred on just 0.1% of the surface of the moon, the potential could reach up to 80% of the desired brightening effect.

Brighter nights could dramatically reduce global energy consumption after sunlight hours. The most immediate benefit of this would be the world shifting its reliance on using street lights at night, and in doing so, save billions of dollars spent on electricity while reducing the amount of CO₂ emissions that electricity use produces.
WHY DOES THE WORLD NEED BRIGHTER NIGHTS?A brighter moon could mean brighter nights on Earth and a simple alternative to street lighting, as well as one significant solution to the global energy crisis. The world could benefit in two main ways:

Dramatic savings in money spent on electricity for street lights
• Entire nations are spending up to 40% of their energy bills on electricity for street lights [1]• In the UK there are 7.5 million street lights costing 840 million USD [2]• Europe as a whole spends 13 billion USD on street lights per year [1]
Reduction of CO₂ emissions• 1 street light = 120kg of CO₂ per year [2] and there are 30 million street lights in the US [3]• The US produces 3.6 million tons of CO₂ emissions as a result of street lights every year• Europe releases over 40 million tons of CO₂ from powering street lights every year (equivalent to powering 20 million cars) [4]
Think of how much individual people, as well as entire nations, could save on electricity costs, and how much the strain on struggling economies could be eased. Furthermore, think of how much CO₂ would be prevented from being released into the atmosphere, and what effect that would have on the environment and global warming – all from removing the need for street lights.
WHY BRIGHTER NIGHTS ARE A SUPERIOR SOLUTION
Simple & FeasibleAs the same side of the moon always faces the Earth, it would only be necessary to treat just 0.1% of the total surface area to produce over 80% of the desired effect. In other words, only a small amount of terrain (approximately the size of Switzerland) needs to be transformed for the Earth to receive extraordinary benefits. When compared to costly, time-consuming solutions such as solar panel production or swapping every incandescent light for an LED light, brightening the moon could actually be a more feasible solution.SustainableTo ensure the execution of brightening the moon will be a long-term solution, the intention will be to use materials and resources already available on the moon while utilizing renewable solar energy to make the process energy efficient.Gradual Changes for Easy AdaptionThe change and benefits received should be very gradual, feeling like a natural process. This would allow nature and humans to adapt and self-regulate to the steady brightening of nights.
Minimal Impact on EnvironmentChoosing the moon to facilitate our solution allows us to potentially cause minimal impact the natural order of the Earth in a way that is non-disruptive to our ecosystems. Other solutions such as solar panels and wind turbines which, in order to meet demand, would need to cover an extensive amount of the Earth’s surface and would majorly disturb natural habitats. Furthermore, execution of this project would not increase CO₂ emissions.Truly Global SolutionThis project delivers results on a genuinely worldwide scale. Different from wind turbines and solar panels, which are suitable to implement in only particular locations every person in every country should be able to experience the benefits, whether it comes from saving electricity expenses or experiencing the benefits of impeding global warming.Effortless for Everyday PeopleMost people are resistant to change and few wish to sacrifice their standard of living and comfort. Transforming the surface of the moon would require no extra effort from people or disruption to their daily life.


ISSUES WE HAVE TAKEN INTO ACCOUNTDuring our initial research some questions were raised. These are the issues that require further analysis.HealthIf the lunar light is too bright at night, it may have negative impacts on health, people may not be able to adjust and get enough sleep and the human body may be disrupted. This should not be an issue because the process is so gradual that people will have a period of over 30 years to adjust.EnvironmentalThere is a concern that the heat generated by from stronger moonlight may increase the Earth’s temperatures, thereby negatively impacting global warming. However, because moonlight is 10,000 times less potent than sunlight, the effect will be negligible. This amount is so small that there should be no increase on the Earth’s temperature, but research is ongoing.Light PollutionAn increase of illumination at night that causes a reduced visibility of stars and other nighttime objects has been identified as natural light pollution. Though light pollution may occur during the full moon phase, other phases of the moon will reflect less sunlight so stars and all other bodies in the sky will be visible on clear nights.We are aware of all the challenges this project may face; additional studies are required. Part of the funds raised for the next phase will be used to prepare the feasibility study that looks into all of the above risks and potential consequences.
NEXT STEPSThe funds that have been acquired for this project will be used for feasibility testing and further research.

The FOREO Institute has developed a number of promising methods of transforming the surface of the moon that need to be further investigated. Various feasibility tests will be carried out to establish the exact methodology of the process that will transform the moon’s surface, as well as which solution is the most cost effective and easy to implement.

Due to the early stages of this project, patent rights and other issues, the FOREO Institute is unable to disclose details on the transformation process. However, we are currently in our testing phase, and our research and investigation is ongoing daily.
