Former PM explains why he allowed 'water villages'
Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad said water villages in Sabah were not demolished during his administration over fears of rebellion. However, things have changed now, and the current situation in Sabah requires that such villages are destroyed. "If we tried it at the time, they would have revolted. Most of them consist of outsiders. We don't want a lot of trouble, for no reason. "But this time, they (villagers) are paving the way for aliens that are unknown to the (authorities)," Mahathir told reporters today. Mahathir said this when asked to elaborate on his speech last Thursday in which he urged the federal government to no longer allow water villages, which dots the Sabah coastline. One such village, Simunul in Semporna, was the scene where six police personnel were ambushed by armed intruders on March 2. Mahathir added that the villagers can be relocated after the government determine whether they are citizens or foreigners. "We can relocate them but we have to find land and find out who are our own people, foreigners and those without documents," he said. |

Sabah villages vulnerable to foreign raiders, says Dr M
MARCH 18, 2013
KUALA LUMPUR, March 18 — Residents of the many water villages off the Sabah coast should be relocated as they are exposed to threats from foreign terrorists.
Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said the haphazard water settlements would make it difficult for security forces to control and secure the areas.
“They have to be relocated. We have to find them land and have to distinguish between citizens, foreigners and those without identification certificates,” he told reporters after witnessing the presentation of checue for RM5 million by Petronas to Cancer Research Initiative Foundation (CARIF) at Petronas Twin Towers here, today.
Six policemen were killed in an ambush by Sulu terrorists from southern Philippines at a water village in Semporna, Sabah on March 2.
On politics, Dr Mahathir (picture) said DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang’s plan to contest seats in Johor in the general election would not have any effect on Barisan Nasional (BN).
“If he wants to contest seats in Johor, by all means. I think Johor people will want to see him contest there,” he added.
Lim yesterday announced that DAP will contest Gelang Patah parliamentary seat in Johor and Bentong parliamentary seat in Pahang, two seats coveted by ally PKR. — Bernama
