Setiap minggu, selama 70 tahun Britain’s most romantic man has revealed the secret of his success - buying his wife flowers every week for 70 YEARS.
Jack Mills, 89, from Yaxley, Cambridgeshire, has managed to keep his wife Millie sweet by handing her more than 3,000 bouquets of flowers in the seven decades they have been together. The World War II veteran first laid eyes on 88-year-old Millie at the age of 18 and flipped a penny with his friend to decide which of the pair would ask her out on a date. Yesterday he said the key to longevity has been buying his sweetheart a bunch of flowers every week without fail.
When the charming OAP started his weekly gesture, back in the 1940s, a bunch of flowers cost just one shilling, compared to ￡5 now. Although Jack admits he would occasionally hand-pick blooms from a meadow if he had time, or didn't have enough cash to buy any. Jack, who has three daughters and six grandchildren, said: 'The secret of a long marriage is caring for each other and sharing. And for me that is buying Millie flowers. 'I get Millie whichever flowers are in season at the time and always red roses on Valentine’s day. 'When we were first courting and I didn’t have much money I used to pick buttercups and daisies to give her. 'It’s money well spent. It’s just natural if you like someone you would spend you last ha’penny on them.' Millie added: 'The secret to a long, happy marriage has to be a bit of give and take.' Jack, who worked for engines giant Perkins, in Peterborough, before he retired, says he is still grateful he one the coin toss all those years ago. He said: 'If the coin had come down tails I would have got someone else who would not have been half as good as she is. 'I think I’m very lucky to be able to say I’m 70 years married. I don’t regret one little bit. We have been blessed with everything as far as I’m concerned.' Daughter Dee, 64, said: 'Dad is an old romantic and mum has always loved having flowers in the house. 'It doesn’t happen to a lot of couples. They wanted to underplay it, but I felt it was quite important that it was recognised.'
