Shabel'skii Natalia L. (1841 - 1904) "The Collector Russian Antiquity"


Natalia L. Kroneberg was born in 1841 in Taganrog in the family Leonid A. Kroneberga. She graduated from the Kharkov Women's Institute. In 1862, she married Peter N. Shabel'skii, a major landowner in Kharkov province. Until the end of 1870 the family lived on the estate "Chupahovka" Kharkiv province (now Akhtyrsky district of the Sumy region) owned by Pyotr Nikolayevich, where Natalia L. had my first embroidery workshop. In the early 1880s the family moved to Moscow.
A lot of traveling in Russia, Natalia L. began collecting fine antiques - Russian folk embroidery, lace, fabric, hats, garments, made of bone, metal and wood.Her Moscow house turned into a museum of Russian antiquities. Catalog of the collection included more than 4,000 items. This collection is the largest collection of Russian textile second half of XIX - early XX centuries.


In 1893, Natalia L. showed his collection at the World's Fair in Chicago in 1894 in Brussels and Antwerp, and in 1900 at the World Exhibition in Paris, where he was awarded the bronze medal.
In 1902, the family moved Shabel'skii for permanent residence in France.
January 17, 1904 Natalia L. died.
She is buried at St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox cemetery "Kokad" in Nice.

VV Stasov wrote in his obituary: "After several years of studying she became one of the greatest scholars and capital characteristic of this sector of the ancient Russian art, and her house in Moscow, became a real museum, incredibly rich and varied."

After the death of Natalia L. failed to maintain the integrity of the collection. Daughters partly sold, partly gave a considerable amount of items. Remains of dispersed to private collections and museums.
