Ortega Expects River Stay

RiverPlate forward Ariel Ortega has dismissed reports linking him with amove away from El Monumental, insisting that he wants to stay at theclub for the rest of his career.

Ortega's current contract expires in June and he has been linked with amove to Ecuadorian club Barcelona of Guayaquil in recent days, but thethirty-four year old hopes to continue at River for some time yet.

"I want to finish my career at River," he told reporters at a press conference on Monday.

"I am very happy here and enjoy the excellent relationship I have with the supporters."

Recentrumours had suggested that Ortega would be moved on due todisagreements with coach Diego Simeone and some of his team-mates, butOrtega has rejected such reports.

"I've never had a problem with anybody, perhaps my name is just mentioned to cover up things that happen," he affirmed.

"Itis necessary to check where that information came from because there isare a lot of things that are said or written with no basis in fact."

Theexperienced forward has found himself consigned to the bench in recentweeks and although he admitted to being frustrated by his lack ofplaying time, he refused to create controversies by criticising Simeone.

"Itis bad for me to be on the bench and clearly it annoys me. I am forplaying; my position is not permanently lost," he concluded.

Reds confirm signing of Swiss defender Degen

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez has begun his summer overhaul of the Reds' underperforming squad by bringing in Switzerland right-back Philipp Degen on a free transfer.

The 25-year-old will leave Borussia Dortmund for Anfield on July 1 when his contract with the Bundesliga club expires.

The former Basel defender will vie with Alvaro Arbeloa and Steve Finnan for the right-back berth after he returns from Euro 2008.

Benitez believes Degen can provide an attacking edge down the right flank.

He said: 'Philipp is still young but has gained great experience from playing in the Bundesliga with Borussia Dortmund and on the international stage with Switzerland.

'He also played in the Champions League during his time with Basel and so is used to top-level football.

'He is an offensive player with great energy and a winning mentality.

'His strength is going forward and I am confident he will be prove to be a quality addition to our squad.'

Degen admitted he took little time to agree to the transfer.

'When I received the offer from Liverpool, there was no doubt I would accept it,' he said.

'They are one of the biggest clubs in the world and I am looking forward to the challenge of establishing myself there and playing in the best league there is.'
