Jules Rimet (born October 14, 1873 at Theuley-les Lavoncourt, France, died October 16, 1956) was president of the French Football Federation from 1919 to 1945 and of FIFA from 1921 to 1954. On Rimet's initiative, the first Football World Cup was held in 1930 (see Football World Cup 1930). The Jules Rimet Trophy was named in his honour.

Two years before the inaugural FIFA World Cup in 1930, the newly drafted regulations stipulated that the winners should be rewarded with a new trophy, with French sculptor Abel Lafleur being assigned this prestigious task.

The little trophy had a hazardous existence. The Italian Vice-President of FIFA, Dr. Ottorino Barassi, hid it in a shoe-box under his bed throughout the Second World War and thus saved it from falling into the hands of occupying troops.

Then in 1966, the cup disappeared while on display as part of the build-up to the World Cup in England and was only recovered, buried under a tree, by a little dog called Pickles.

Finally, in 1983, it was stolen again, this time in Rio de Janeiro, and apparently melted down by the thieves. The Brazilian Football Association, who had earned the right to keep the trophy after having won it three times, ordered a replica to be made.

The original trophy was 35cm high and weighed approximately 3.8 kg. The statuette was made of sterling silver and gold plated, with a blue base made of semi-precious stone (lapis lazuli).

There was a gold plate on each of the four sides of the base, on which were engraved the name of the trophy as well as the names of the nine winners between 1930 and 1970.

malaysia first time antar wakil utk pusingan kelayakan start dari kempen 1974.

world cup tahun 1974, hanya 1 wakil asia dan oceania utk kuota wc...dan australia dpt kuota nih.mesia sangkut kat pusingan zone kecik lagi.

world cup tahun 1978,,iran dpt satu satu nya kuota tu...dan sekali lagi malaysia sangkut Awal awal kat pusingan kelayakan peringkat zone kecik lagi.

world cup tahun 1982, pun sangkut awal awal.waktu ni kuota asia dan oceania ditambah kpd 2...kuwait dan new zealand menempahnya.

aku rasa mesti atuk tu konpius pasal banyak sgt peringkat group kecik kecik yg mesti ditempuhi.takpun dia tertukar dengan kelayakan olimpik yg mesia berjaya layak tahun 1972 dan 1980

Trivia

Uruguay, 1930

In 1930, The Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) held soccer's first World Cup tournament in Montevideo, Uruguay.

There were a total of 13 teams in the first world cup. Besides the host Uruguay, there were Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, France, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru, Romania, the United States and Yugoslavia.

The first world cup soccer match kicked off on July 13th, 1930 with France beating Mexico 4 to 1

France's captain in the first World Cup match, Alex Villaplane, was killed fifteen years later for alleged collaboration with the Nazis. Villaplane was shot dead by French resistence fighters in July 1945.

A record that will surely never be beaten, the lowest recorded attendance for a match was 300 spectators for the match between Romania & Peru in Montevideo on 14 July 1930.

The Romanian team in World Cup 1930 were selected by their King. The 'football-crazy' King Carol II of Romania personally selected the team, and asked the employers to grant each player a three-month leave with full pay.

Uruguayan goalkeeper Antonio Mazzali returned home before kick-off of the 1930 finals as he had sneaked out from the hotel without permission. The Uruguayan team had been isolated in a Montevideo hotel for almost eight weeks before Mazzali sneaked out one night to visit his family. Mazzali was a member of Uruguay's Olympic gold medal teams in 1924 and 1928, but he had never appeared in any World Cup finals.

The match between Argentina and France on 15 July 1930 was terminated by the referee by mistake six minutes before time. The Brazilian referee Almeida Rego whistled to end the match at the 39th minute in the second half when Argentina was leading 1-0. He resumed the match half an hour later, but no goal was scored in the 'extra' time.

The USA trainer had to be carried off unconscious during the 1930 Semi-Final against Argentina after he ran to the pitch to attend an injured player, dropped his medicine box, and broke a bottle of chloroform. When he tried to pick up the broken bottle, he took in the fumes and fell to the ground immediately. The injured player recovered without any treatment.

The two semi-final matches saw identical 6-1 scores, as Argentina beat the US and Uruguay defeated Yugoslavia.

Thousands of Argentinian supporters failed to attend the 1930 Final as their boats were delayed due to thick fog. Eight of the ten chartered boats were unable to arrive in time for the Final, though fortunately the match referee was on the first boat that arrived.

Uruguay and Argentina tossed up before the 1930 Final to choose the ball, as both teams wanted to use their own 'home-made' ball in the Final. Argentina won and their ball was used in the first half and the Uruguayan ball the second half.

Hector Castro, who scored Uruguay's winning goal in the 1930 Final, had only one hand. He had lost one hand and part of his arm in a childhood accident.

An unexpected consequence of Argentina's defeat in the 1930 Final was that the Argentinian president was overthrown several days after the Final. Argentinian president Irigoyen was overthrown in a military coup flamed by the deeply disappointed citizens.

After winning the World Cup in 1930, the Uruguayan players were treated as national heroes, and each player was presented with a plot of land and a new house by the municipality of Montevideo.

Spain, 1982

Soviet referee Miroslav Stupar changed his mind and disallowed a goal by France in a finals match on 21 June 1982, after the Kuwaiti players complained that they had heard a whistle and stopped playing. Kuwaiti player Prince Fahid, the Kuwaiti FA president, walked out to the field to argue with the referee and threatened to pull out his team.

The referee then reversed his goal decision. France ended up winning the match 4-1. Subsequently, the referee was suspended, and the Prince was fined US$14,000.

The first match decided with a penalty shoot-out was the semi-final between West Germany & France on 8 July, 1982, in which the Germans won the shootout 5:4.

The first player to take penalty shootout in World Cup finals was Alain Giresse of France, who scored the first ever penalty in a shootout where France lost 4:5 to West Germany in the semi-final on 8 July 1982.

The first substitute to score a hat-trick was Laszlo Kiss of Hungary in a match against El Salvador on 15 June 1982.

Italy, 1934

Short-sighted Swiss centre-forward Poldi Kielholz had to wear spectacles in matches of the 1934 finals. He scored three goals in two matches in the 1934 finals. :lol

France, 1938

At the start of a 1938 finals match against Poland, Brazilian player Leonidas took off his boots because he wanted to play in the muddy pitch barefooted. The referee immediately ordered Leonidas to put his boots back on, and Leonidas scored 4 goals in that match, and finished top scorer of the 1938 tournament with 8 goals in 4 matches.

As Italian skipper Peppino Meazza scored the penalty kick in a 1938 Semi-final, his shorts, torn earlier in the game, slipped down to leave him exposed. :malu: His celebrating team-mates surrounded him until a new pair of shorts were produced. :lol

The first player to score an own goal in the World Cup was Ernst Loertscher of Switzerland against West Germany on 9 June 1938.

The first time numbers were used on players' shirts in World Cup was in the 1938 finals in France.

Switzerland, 1954

The first time the tradition of swapping shirts began in World Cup 1954.

Chile, 1962

When Chilean player Eladio Rojas scored a goal in the 1962 quarter-final against Russia, the first person he hugged was the Russian goalkeeper.:lol Rojas was so excited because the goalkeeper he had beaten was the 'unbeatable' Lev Yashin.

The Brazil-England game at the 1962 World Cup was interrupted when a dog ran onto the pitch and Jimmy Greaves went down on all fours to catch him.

England, 1966

The 1966 opening match between England and Uruguay was delayed as seven English players had left their identity cards at the hotel. A police motor cyclist was dispatched to collect the identity cards from the hotel.

A mascot was first used in World Cup in 1966. The first World Cup mascot was a lion-like boy called Willie used for the England 1966 World Cup.

Drug testing first introduced in World Cup finals in 1966. Players banned after failing in drug testing include Haiti's Ernest Jean-Joseph (1974), Scotland's Willie Johnston (1978) and Argentina's Diego Maradona (1994). Jean-Joseph claimed he was beaten by some Haitian officials before being flown home in disgrace.
