The human eye generally has three types of cones that are sensitive to red, green and blue wavelengths of light. These three cones work together to allow us to see millions of colors. However, the vision of every kind of animal on Earth is unique, some can even see what we can't and how animals see the world is much different than you might think!
Giant Clams
- Giant clams have a few hundred eyes about the size of pinholes and have 12-color type color vision, which is four times than human, but they cannot combine the information together. This means that they see colorful, but undefined images.
Mantis Shrimp
- Mantis shrimp have unusual eyes. They have 16 color receptors. Oddly, they are not that good at distinguishing between colors, but they can detect another property of light invisible to humans which is polarization.
