Lelong barang Gandhi jadi isu

NEW DELHI: Lelongan beberapa barang peribadi milik Mahatma Gandhi termasuk kaca mata bulat yang menjadi imej beliau mencetuskan satu kempen supaya barang berkenaan dipulangkan ke India.

Cicit Gandhi, Tushar Gandhi, menyifatkan perkara itu sebagai 'penghinaan besar' terhadap barang milik pemimpin kemerdekaan berkenaan yang akan dijual bulan depan di New York dan beliau berusaha memungut wang bagi membawanya pulang.

Sandal milik Gandhi, jam saku dan beberapa bekas hidangan adalah antara barang yang ditawarkan.

Ahli Parlimen, Mohan Singh turut menggesa kerajaan membeli barang berkenaan dan membawanya pulang ke India untuk diletakkan di sebuah muzium.

Ramachandra Rahi, ketua setiausaha Yayasan Peringatan Gandhi di New Delhi berkata, barang milik Gandhi perlu ada bagi generasi akan datang melihatnya dan sebagai sumber inspirasi mereka.

Indira Gandhi got highly affected by the thoughts of Mahatma Gandhi. She visited Sabarmati Ashram where Mahatma Gandhi used to live and she got impressed by his simple life and the feelings of patriotism.

After she passed her Matric, she was sent to Shantiniketan founded by Rabindranath Tagore and later joined Oxford University Sommerville College but for some reasons she couldn't complete her graduation.

Indira Gandhi was not in a direct relationship with Mahatma Gandhi though both the personalities had their major roles in Indian politics. Because of his philosophy, he had been regarded as a saint though he objected to being called so. But the way he led his life signifies that he had saintly manners.

Last year ada beli buku biografi dia...seploh ringgit jek, sebab buku tu disubsidi. Ada banyak versi...tapi saya beli versi Inggeris.

Banyak masa awal life dia dihabiskan di South Africa. Dia kahwin usia muda...dan pengamal vegetarian yang ketat. Ada satu bab, dia sanggup risk nyawa anak dia daripada amik daging, walaupun Doktor nasihatkan sebaliknya. Nasib baik anak dia hidup lagi esoknya...

Dia jurusan peguam, tapi nervous masa mula-mula public speaking. Overall memang good book. India memang lucky to have Gandhi.

Memang banyak cita pasal masa kat Afrika Selatan...termasuk time dia follow pi tolong perang. Dia sendiri mengaku orang India tak berapa pembersih sangat...tapi masa kat Afrika memang teruk dia kena diskriminasi.

NEW DELHI - Kerajaan India mengemukakan rancangan untuk membawa kembali sejumlah barang peribadi milik Mahatma Gandhi yang akan dilelong di New York, kata seorang pegawai semalam.

Satu jawatankuasa kerajaan sudah bertemu dua kali untuk merangka pelan bagi membawa pulang barang itu ke India, kata jurucakap Kementerian Kebudayaan.

"Jawatankuasa itu akan mengemukakan cadangan kepada kerajaan," kata jurucakap.

Acara lelongan selama dua hari bermula 4 Mac depan mencetuskan kempen untuk membawa pulang barang milik Gandhi termasuk cermin mata bulat, sepatu, jam poket dan beberapa pinggan mangkuk.

Satu daripada cadangan itu adalah untuk mengemukakan usul kepada bank-bank atau firma korporat agar membeli barangan tersebut sebelum lelongan bermula.

Pada 2007, kementerian tersebut berjaya berunding dengan firma lelongan Christie di London untuk membeli sepucuk surat yang ditulis mendiang sejurus sebelum kematiannya.

Bagaimanapun, cicit Gandhi, Tushar Gandhi secara terbuka meminta rakyat menyalurkan dana kepada Yayasan Mahatma Gandhi agar barang itu dapat kembali ke India.

NEW YORK: The US-based owner of Mahatma Gandhi memorabilia, up for auction here this week, has offered to donate the rare collection to India if it agrees to spend 5% of its gross domestic product (GDP) on the poor.

James Otis owns five items -- Gandhi抯 metal-rimmed glasses, a pocket watch, a pair of sandals, and a plate and bowl -- which India is under intense pressure to acquire on the grounds they are part of its national heritage.

Seorang pengumpul barangan di California yang juga seorang penjual, James Otis sebelum ini berkata, pelelong telah mengeluarkan barangan Gandhi dari senarai lelong.

''Saya tidak menyangka tindakan saya akan menimbulkan kontroversi. Saya berdoa supaya keputusannya nanti positif dan direstui Gandhi,'' kata Otis sambil mengakui kesanggupannya mendermakan barangan Gandhi sekiranya kerajaan India bersetuju meningkatkan peruntukan terhadap rakyat miskin negara itu.

Lelongan barangan itu mendapat kritikan kerajaan India yang berpendapat barangan Gandhi adalah warisan negara tersebut yang sepatutnya dipamerkan di muzium.

Segelintir rakyat India menyifatkan lelongan itu menyalahi falsafah Gandhi yang bersikap tidak tamakkan harta dan mengamalkan kehidupan yang sederhana.

Gandhi's Items Bring Auction House Huge Commission

NEW DELHI, March 7 (Bernama) -- The personal items of India's modern founding father, Mahatma Gandhi, sold for US$1.8 million at an auction in New York Friday, brought US$296,000 in commission for the auction house, the Antiquorum Auctioneers, said the semi-official Press Trust of India news agency Saturday.

A day after the articles were sold, the auction house said that Gandhi's pocket watch, sandals, glasses, bowl and plate fetched a total of US$2.096 million, commission included, according to the report.

The items were bought by Indian liquor baron Vijay Mallya from American collector James Otis, who got US$1.8 million.

Mallya, known for having already bought back from international auctioneers a number of India's national treasures including a royal sword, said he would bring the items back to India for public display.

The Indian government strongly opposed the auction, saying it was against the principles of India's national icon.

Early life

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born in Porbander, a coastal town in present-day Gujarat, Western India, on 2 October 1869. His father, Karamchand Gandhi (1822-1885), who belonged to the Hindu Modh community, was the diwan (Prime Minister) of the eponymous Porbander state, a small princely state in the Kathiawar Agency of British India. His mother, Putlibai, who came from the Hindu Pranami Vaishnava community, was Karamchand's fourth wife, the first three wives having apparently died in childbirth. Growing up with a devout mother and the Jain traditions of the region, the young Mohandas absorbed early the influences that would play an important role in his adult life; these included compassion to sentient beings, vegetarianism, fasting for self-purification, and mutual tolerance between individuals of different creeds.
In May 1883, the 13-year old Mohandas was married to 14-year old Kasturbai Makhanji (her first name was usually shortened to "Kasturba," and affectionately to "Ba") in an arranged child marriage, as was the custom in the region. However, as was also the custom of the region, the adolescent bride was to spend much time at her parents' house, and away from her husband. In 1885, when Gandhi was 15, the couple's first child was born, but survived only a few days; Gandhi's father, Karamchand Gandhi, had died earlier that year. Mohandas and Kasturbai had four more children, all sons: Harilal, born in 1888; Manilal, born in 1892; Ramdas, born in 1897; and Devdas, born in 1900. At his middle school in Porbandar and high school in Rajkot, Gandhi remained an average student academically. He passed the matriculation exam for Samaldas College at Bhavnagar, Gujarat with some difficulty. While there, he was unhappy, in part because his family wanted him to become a barrister.

On 4 September 1888, less than a month shy of his nineteenth birthday, Gandhi traveled to London, England, to study law at University College London and to train as a barrister. His time in London, the Imperial capital, was influenced by a vow he had made to his mother in the presence of the Jain monk Becharji, upon leaving India, to observe the Hindu precepts of abstinence from meat, alcohol, and promiscuity. Although Gandhi experimented with adopting "English" customs梩aking dancing lessons for example梙e could not stomach his landlady's mutton and cabbage. She pointed him towards one of London's few vegetarian restaurants. Rather than simply go along with his mother's wishes, he read about, and intellectually embraced vegetarianism. He joined the Vegetarian Society, was elected to its executive committee, and founded a local chapter. He later credited this with giving him valuable experience in organizing institutions. Some of the vegetarians he met were members of the Theosophical Society, which had been founded in 1875 to further universal brotherhood, and which was devoted to the study of Buddhist and Hindu literature. They encouraged Gandhi to read the Bhagavad Gita. Not having shown a particular interest in religion before, he read works of and about Hinduism, Christianity, Buddhism, Islam and other religions. He returned to India after being called to the bar of England and Wales by the Inner Temple but had limited success establishing a law practice in Mumbai. Later, after applying and being turned down for a part-time job as a high school teacher, he ended up returning to Rajkot to make a modest living drafting petitions for litigants, a business he was forced to close when he ran afoul of a British officer. In his autobiography, he refers to this incident as an unsuccessful attempt to lobby on behalf of his older brother. It was in this climate that, in 1893, he accepted a year-long contract from an Indian firm to a post in Natal, South Africa, then part of the British Empire.

Role in Zulu War of 1906

In 1906, after the British introduced a new poll-tax, Zulus in South Africa killed two British officers. In response, the British declared a war against the Zulus. Gandhi actively encouraged the British to recruit Indians. He argued that Indians should support the war efforts in order to legitimize their claims to full citizenship. The British, however, refused to commission Indians as army officers. Nonetheless, they accepted Gandhi's offer to let a detachment of Indians volunteer as a stretcher bearer corps to treat wounded British soldiers. This corps was commanded by Gandhi. On 21 July 1906, Gandhi wrote in Indian Opinion: "The corps had been formed at the instance of the Natal Government by way of experiment, in connection with the operations against the Natives consists of twenty three Indians". Gandhi urged the Indian population in South Africa to join the war through his columns in Indian Opinion: 揑f the Government only realized what reserve force is being wasted, they would make use of it and give Indians the opportunity of a thorough training for actual warfare.
