Badminton merupakan sejenis sukan raket yang dimainkan oleh sama ada dua orang pemain bertentangan (perseorangan) ataupun dua pasangan bertentangan (beregu), yang mana posisi pemain ialah bertentangan di dalam sebuah gelanggang empat segi yang dibahagikan oleh jaring.
Pemain dapat memungut mata melalui pukulan bulu tangkis menggunakan raket mereka jadi ia dapat melepasi atas jaring dan jatuh di kawasan pihak lawan. Pukulan rali berhenti selepas bulu tangkis jatuh di atas lantai, dan bulu tangkis hanya boleh dipukul sekali bagi setiap sisi sebelum ia melepasi atas jaring.
Badminton ialah acara sukan Olimpik dengan lima disipin yang kompetitif perseorangan lelaki dan wanita, beregu lelaki dan wanita, dan beregu campuran, yang mana setiap pasangannya ialah lelaki dan perempuan.
Bagi tahap tinggi permainan, sukan ini memerlukan penjagaan kesihatan yang cemerlang: pemain memerlukan stamina aerobik, ketangkasan, kekuatan, kelajuan, dan ketelitian. Ia juga merupakan sebuah sukan teknikal, yang memerlukan koordinasi badan yang baik, kemahiran teknikal, dan kecanggihan kemahiran penggunaan raket.

Badminton telah diperkenalkan pada zaman silam; sukan ini mula dimainkan di Yunani silam dan Mesir. Di Jepun, sukan berkaitan iaitu Hanetsuki telah dimainkan seawal abad ke-16. Di kawasan barat, badminton muncul daripada sebuah sukan yang dipanggil battledore and shuttlecock, yang mana dua atau lebih pemain memukul bulu tangkis di udara menggunakan raket kecil.
Sukan ini dikenali sebagai "Poona" di India semasa abad ke-18, dan pegawai tentera British mengaplikasikan versi India semasa kembali ke England pada 1860an, yang mana ia dimainkan di rumah kediaman kebangsaan seperti kediaman kelas atasan. Isaac Spratt, penjual anak patung London, menerbitkan sebuah risalah iaitu, "Badminton Battledore - a new game" pada 1860, tetapi malangnya tiada cetakan dilakukan.
Sukan baru ini diperkenalkan pada 1873 di Badminton House, Gloucestershire, yang dimiliki oleh Duke of Beaufort. Pada waktu itu, sukan itu merujuk kepada "The Game of Badminton," dan, nama rasmi sukan ini kemudian menjadi Badminton.
Sehingga 1887 sukan ini dimainkan di England di bawah peraturan yang terdapat di India. Bath Badminton Club mempiawaikan peraturan dan mengaplikasikan sukan ini dalam versi Inggeris. Undang-undang asas itu telah dicipta pada 1887.
Pada 1893, Badminton Association of England diterbitkan sebagai set peraturan pertama mengikut ketetapan, seakan-akan menyamai peraturan ketika ini, dan secara rasmi dilancarkan sebuah peraturan iaitu "Dunbar" di 6 Waverley Grove, Portsmouth, England pada 13 September tahun yang sama. Mereka juga mula menganjurkan Kejohanan Badminton Terbuka Seluruh England, kejohanan badminton pertamd di dunia, pada 1899.
Pertubuhan Badminton Antarabangsa (IBF) (kini dikenali sebagai Persekutuan Badminton Dunia) yang telah ditubuhkan pada 1934 yang dianggotai Kanada, Denmark, England, Perancis, Belanda, Ireland, New Zealand, Scotland, dan Wales sebagai anggota pengasas. India menyertai pertubuhan ini pada 1936. Pertubuhan BWF kini merupakan sebuah badan badminton antarabangsa dan menguruskan sukan ini secara global.
Meskipun asal-usul sukan terletak di England, badminton di peringkat antarabangsa mempunyai rekod tradisi yang didominasi oleh beberapa negara Asia, termasuk Denmark dari Eropah. China, Indonesia, Korea Selatan, dan Malaysia merupakan antara negara yang mempunyai pemain bertaraf-dunia secara konsisten sejak beberapa dekad yang lalu dan mendominasi pertandingan peringkat antarabangsa, yang mana China sering menjadi pendominasi sejak kebelakangan ini.

MALAYSIA TO HOST BWF SUPER SERIES MASTERS FINALS

The BadmintonWorld Federation (BWF) is pleased to announce that Malaysia will onceagain host the BWF World Super Series Masters Finals from 2nd to 6th December 2009.
“Itis with a sense of extreme pleasure that we are now able to announcethe much awaited news regarding the host of the Super Series Finals.Both the BWF and YONEX-SUNRISEhad hoped to be able to announce this earlier, but due to the difficultfinancial climate this year, it has not been possible to secure thehost before this,” said BWF deputy president Paisan Rangsikitpho.
InApril 2009 the BWF signed a Super Series contract with SUNRISE SPORTSLTD to secure the rights as the Title and Equipment Sponsors for theMasters Finals for 2008, 2009 and 2010. Meanwhile, the global financialclimate has provided challenges in finalising a host association thisyear and hence the delay in announcing the same.
“On behalf of the BWF I would like to record our appreciation to the BadmintonAssociation of Malaysia (BAM) and the local organisers for taking onthe responsibility of organising the Super Series Masters Finals,”Rangsikitpho said.
The deputy president further added, “BWFalso records its appreciation to Sunrise and Company for fulfilling thecommitment of sponsoring the Super Series Finals despite difficulteconomic situation worldwide.”
“Last year’s Finals in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah were very well received and we expect badminton fans in Malaysia to once again support the Finals” concluded Rangsikitpho.
Theformat of the competition remains unchanged with the top eight rankedplayers/pairs in the Super Series ranking, qualifying for the Finals.This, however, is limited to a maximum of two entries per event perMember Association.
TheBWF World Super Series is a 12-leg circuit which offers minimum totalprize money of US$200,000 for each event. For the Finals, the prizepool is US$500,000 with the winners of the men’s and women’s singlespocketing US$40,000 each for their success.
The YONEX French Open ended Sunday, 1stNovember yet players can still earn Super Series ranking points at theforthcoming YONEX-SUNRISE Hong Kong Open to be held from 10th to 15th
November followed by the Li-NING China Open from 17th to 22nd November.
“TheBAM in particular is an active member of the BWF and a willingorganiser of international events. Moreover BAM has proven to be acapable host for some of our top level international events,” added BWFChief Operating Officer Thomas Lund .
“TheBWF is confident that with the cooperation of all parties, the MastersFinals will once again be a huge success,” Lund continued.
TheYONEX-SUNRISE BWF World Junior Championships 2009 has just concluded inKedah, Malaysia, while the 2010 Thomas Cup and Uber Cup Finals will beplayed from 9th to 16th May 2010 in Kuala Lumpur.
Besidesthese tournaments, the BAM also hosts the Proton Malaysia Open SuperSeries in Kuala Lumpur and the YONEX-SUNRISE Malaysia Open Grand PrixGold Championships in Johor Baru annually.

Men’s doubles pair Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong have not only regained the No. 1 spot in the world rankings but they have also shot to the top of the Super Series standings.
In the latest list released by the World Badminton Federation (WBF) after the Super Series Open tournaments in Denmark and France, Kien Keat-Boon Heong are now ranked ahead of Mathias Boe-Carsten Mogensen of Denmark and Olympic champions Markis Kido-Hendra Setiawan of Indonesia.
Kien Keat-Boon Heong emerged triumphant in the Denmark Open in Odense but missed out on back-to-back titles when they were beaten by defending champions Markis-Hendra in the French Open final last Sunday.
Back on top: Kien Keat-Boon Heong have regained the number one spot in the world rankings and are assured of making the cut for the Super Series Masters Final next month.
With 48,520 points in the bag, Kien Keat-Boon Heong are assured of making the cut for the Super Series Masters Finals next month even if they skip the remaining two legs in Hong Kong and China.
Only the top eight after the 12-leg series will feature in the Masters Finals, which will be held from Dec 2-6 in Kuala Terengganu.
However, world championship silver medallists Lee Yong-dae-Jung Jae-sung are the notable pair in danger of missing the cut.
The South Korean top pair last featured in the Indonesia Open and have since skipped the last four Super Series tournaments. Yong-dae-Jae-sung are expected to play in the Hong Kong and China Opens to rake in ranking points to make the Finals.
The other Malaysian pairs still in the running to get among the top eight qualifiers are Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari-Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif (No. 12) and Gan Teik Chai-Tan Bin Shen (No. 14). But their chances to make it are slim as they have to win in either Hong Kong or Shanghai to get into the Finals.
Doubles chief coach Rexy Mainaky is glad to see Kien Keat-Boon Heong following in the footsteps of Lee Chong Wei, who held on to his top ranked spot in the world and Super Series rankings despite not competing in the Denmark and French Opens.
“I hope they make their position stronger. They have had several disappointments in the past, including the world championships this year,” he said.
“The last time they held top place in the rankings, they failed to hold on to it. It was a good learning process for them and hopefully they do not make the same mistakes.”
Malaysia should have a smaller number of qualifiers for Finals this season compared to the inaugural edition in Kota Kinabalu.
Besides Chong Wei, Chin Eei Hui-Wong Pei Tty, who are second in the women’s doubles rankings, are also assured of qualification.
World champion Lin Dan broke into the top four after lifting the French Open title and has the distinction of having won three out of the five Super Series events he competed in thus far.
