Official: Pirelli to provide Formula 1 tyres

Pirelli has been confirmed as Formula 1’s sole tyre supplier for the next three seasons, following a meeting of governing body the FIA’s World Motor Sport Council (WMSC) in Geneva on Wednesday.
With Bridgestone set to leave the sport at the end of the current season, having been the only tyre company involved in F1 since the start of 2007, talks between teams narrowed the final choice down to Pirelli and France’s Michelin – last involved in 2006 – although a final decision has been delayed for some weeks.

However, the FIA has now decided to select what was incidentally believed to be the preferred choice for most teams, as Pirelli prepares to return after last winning with Nélson Piquet and Benetton at the 1991 Canadian Grand Prix.

The following FIA statement also suggests that the Paris-based federation is hoping to ensure that varying compounds will be used in all races in order to spice up the show:

‘Pirelli has been selected as the single tyre supplier for the FIA Formula One World Championship for a period of three years, commencing in 2011.

The sole supplier will undertake to strictly respect the sporting and technical regulations implemented by the FIA.’

Pirelli: Universal F1-GP2 tyre decision down to FIA...

Pirelli, the new tyre supplier for both Formula 1 and GP2 in 2011, has explained to GPUpdate.net that the introduction of a universal tyre to be used by both championships is now in the hands of sporting governing body the FIA.

The idea of the common tyre was suggested by the GP2 Series earlier this month although it remains to be seen as to whether the proposal will finally be put forward.

“Well, it’s really a matter with the FIA but it’s certainly an idea,” a Pirelli spokesperson explained to GPUpdate.net on Thursday afternoon.

“Yes, it would be cheaper and easier to develop than two separate tyres but, on the other hand, there has to be that ladder of performance as well.”

GPUpdate.net has also been informed that the latest information on Pirelli’s F1 test driver will be released tonight; at present, question marks surround the situation after Nick Heidfeld was confirmed as a Sauber race driver on Wednesday.

Official: Grosjean to test for Pirelli at Monza..

Reported by GPUpdate.net earlier today but now made official, ex Renault F1 driver Romain Grosjean will be taking over from Nick Heidfeld as new tyre supplier Pirelli tests in Italy next week. The change comes as the Milan-based company wishes to favour no current team, with the German having signed up for a Sauber race seat.

Heidfeld began the 2010 season as reserve driver for Mercedes GP although the 33-year-old terminated that contract in order to aid Pirelli with its testing programme for next season, with the tyre returnee using a 2009 model Toyota and with its third test outing having been at Jerez on Wednesday and Thursday of this week.
However, as expected, an official press release from Pirelli relating to Grosjean’s new role has now been issued.

"We’d like to thank Nick for his very valuable contribution to our tyre development programme and we wish him all the best for the future," comments Paul Hembery, Motorsport Director for Pirelli.

"In order to avoid favouring any individual team, we have jointly decided to release Nick from his contract and now we have chosen Romain to test for us at Monza.

"He’s packed a lot of experience into a short space of time, including all our GP3 tyre development, so I’m sure he’ll be able to give us some very useful feedback.

"The tests here at Jerez have gone extremely well and we completed all the work that we planned over the two days. Now we move on to Monza, where our task will be to finalise the construction before we focus further on compounds.”
