GEORGE TOWN: A car broke down in the middle of busy Kelawei Road during Friday rush hour but fortunately for the Chinese woman driver, a group of Muslim worshippers heading to a nearby mosque helped pushed the vehicle to the side of the road.
The good deed was witnessed by Penang Island City Council councillor Muhammad Bakhtiar Wan Chik who recorded the scene and uploaded the video to his Facebook page.
In the caption, he wrote: “We live in a multicultural society. A car driven by a Chinese lady broke down in the middle of the road and caused slow traffic at Jalan Kelawai. A group of Muslim worshippers attending Friday prayers moved the car to the side.”
When contacted, Muhammad Bakhtiar said he was heading for Friday prayers when he saw the woman looking lost standing next to her car which got stalled in middle of the road.
“It was exactly outside the mosque in Jalan Kelawei which is a busy road. I saw a group of men came to her rescue and helped push her car to the side of the road. It was around 1.30pm before the sermon and she was alone.
“This is what a multicultural society is about. If somebody needs help, it should be given regardless of religion and race,” he said.
Referring to the incident in front of a surau in Johor Baru during Friday prayers last week, Muhammad Bakhtiar said the tolerance shown by the group of worshippers in Kelawei Road is noteworthy.
“I am surprised my video has gone viral. It could be because of the last week’s incident.
"This time there was no quarrel, just peace as we help each other regardless of religion or race. This is what we Malaysians love to see,” he said.
His video has garnered 373 likes and more than 21,000 views. It has also been shared 236 times as at 9.40pm Friday.
Last Friday, a motorist honked repeatedly when his car was blocked by vehicles parked on both sides of the road outside a surau in Johor Baru.
A group of worshippers damaged the car as well as beat him up.
Tak perlu nak dihebohkan/jadikan isu, hari2 kereta rosak merata tempat (bukan saja di Penang). Kalau ada yg rosak/perlukan bantuan (eg. tukar tayar pancit, tolong tolak tepi jalan, tolak sbb sangkut banjir kilat, etc.) tak kira bangsa ada jer yg pakat2 tolong (melayu tolong cina/india, cina tolong melayu/india, india tolong cina/melayu, etc.). Takder isu pun sebenarnya kecuali pihak2 tertentu yg berkepentingan sengaja jadikan isu untuk tujuan tertentu.... jadi perlu ke dipanjang-panjang kan isu2 remeh ni...
