The Underground City of Derinkuyu
The Derinkuyu underground city is an ancient multi-level underground city located in Turkey. Its a fascinating achievement of ancient engineering and skills. This city extending to a depth of approximately 60 metres. It was the largest excavated underground city in Turkey and is one of several underground complexes found throughout Cappadocia. The city’s history and origin are shrouded in mystery and no one has been able to fully explain how the city was built.
Stone-Age tunnels
Archaeologists discovered a network of Stone-Age tunnels stretching all the way from Scotland to Turkey. This 12,000-year-old massive underground network is very impressive. The tunnels are quite small, which is just enough for a person to crawl through. In some places there are small rooms, storage chambers and seating areas. No one knows exactly why these tunnels were built, but some believe it might have been to escape predators or bad weather conditions.
