There are a lot of places scientists would expect to find sharks in the ocean. Back to 2015, a team of researchers captured video evidence of sharks living in a volcano Kavachi. Kavachi is one of the most active underwater volcanoes in the southwest Pacific Ocean.
Originally, the team went down to study hydrothermal activity. They dropped a camera into the main crater of the volcano. Kavachi was not actively erupting when the team captured the footage, but just to be safe, they only left the camera in the underwater crater for an hour. The water inside the crater is hot, acidic, and clouded with sediment, making the inside of a volcano an unlikely place for marine life. They were shocked when the footage from the inside of Kavachi captured two different species of sharks. Silky sharks and Hammerhead sharks were both recorded swimming in the crater. They also found a stingray, a snapper fish and some other marine life. After they announced the finding, scientists were surprised that anything can live in such harsh conditions.
