Archaeologists have discovered the sunken ancient city of Neapolis off the northeastern coast of Tunisia. The finding prove that an ancient Roman city that once stood there was devastated by a tsunami and was partially lost beneath the waves. In 2010, the researchers began searching for the Neapolis and finally discovered the city's ruin in the summer of 2017.
The submerged city stretches over 20 hectares. The researchers found Roman street signs and monuments on the ocean floor. In addition, they also found around 100 tanks that were used in the production of garum. Based on underwater prospecting carried out at the site, the researchers have asserted Neapolis was partially submerged by a tsunami on July in 365 AD.
