saya ada sedikit kemusykilan mengenai thyroid stimulating hormone (tsh) dan t4. saya baru melahirkan anak  dan pada kali pertama

                 ujian tsh : 31.26
                          t4  : 90.2

manakala kali kedua      tsh : 3.65
                                      t4  : 18.15

kemusykilan saya adakah paras hormon ini akan naik dan ada kemungkinan ke pertumbuhan baby saya terencat? (kritinisme) . terima kasih pada yang sudi memberi info

...newborns are routinely screened for these thyroid hormones to find out if their thyroid gland function is normal...

...why the need to do so in these newborns??...cos...there is this thing called congenital hypothyroidism which if left untreated can prevent normal growth and development and cause other severe problems such as mental retardation...

...tsh nie physiologically speaking memang high during the first 2 days of life...that is why sometimes we do get abnormal tsh result...so...for those babies with high level of tsh they are usually being tested again on day 5 of life as by then...these hormones fluctuation would have settled down...

...the normal tsh level is between the range of 2.2 - 25 mIU/l...while the t4 (total) normal value range is between  5 - 13 µg/dL...but...these reference values are dependent on many factors such as the baby's age....gender...test methods...etc...lagik pon...different labs have their own standards and different guidelines...so...it is best that u discuss your baby's result with your dr...

...treatment for congenital hypothyroidism is by giving thyroid hormone...hypothyroidism usually cannot be prevented...but the mental retardation and other complications usually can be prevented by prompt diagnosis and treatment...
