Sebastian Vettel was fined RM180,875 and penalised 10 grid places for the next race.

YOUNG German Sebastian Vettel was fined heavily and penalised 10 grid places for the next race after stewards blamed him for a collision in the final laps of the chaotic Australian GP yesterday.

The Red Bull driver was on course to take second place behind Jenson Button in the season-opening race when he collided spectacularly with Polish driver Robert Kubica in a BMW-Sauber, putting both cars out of the race.

Stewards later fined the 21-year-old US$50,000 (RM180,875) for failing to leave the track and also imposed a drop of 10 grid places for next weekend's Malaysian GP in Sepang.

It was a devastating result for Vettel, who doggedly pursued the tearaway Button and his Brawn GP machine for virtually all of the 58-lap race, only to come to grief a couple of laps from the chequered flag.

Vettel appeared to run too deep on a turn and came into contact with Kubica's car, breaking his left front wheel and leading Kubica to slam his car into a wall.

Vettel, who won his first grand prix at Monza last year, was heard to apologise to his team over the car-to-pit radio.

"We were in second and a strong position," Vettel said afterwards. "But then a couple of laps from the end I had a stupid racing accident with Robert.

"At the time I turned in I was ahead, but I couldn't keep up the speed in the corner and Robert was on a harder tyre and was so much quicker.

"At the time we collided he was in front, but I had nowhere to go, I couldn't stop the car, or turn to the right and my tyres were gone.

"It's a shame as it meant the end of the race for both of us."

Kubica rued his lost opportunity and said he felt he had a winning chance at the time of the collision.

"What a disappointment," he said. "I had a chance to win this race because Jenson Button and Sebastian were on soft tyres and struggling, while I was on the harder compound and was able to drive much quicker.

"We both had a great weekend up to this point and we leave Melbourne with nothing." -- AFP
