Natural disaster or man-made calamity?     * Asia Pacific disasters 2009-10-06 11:49     * In recent days, Philippines, Indonesia, Samoa, Vietnam, India andTaiwan have been struck by hurricanes, earthquakes and tsunami. Theworld has been devastated and the people are living in sorrow. The disasters have destroyed their homes and turned the areas into ahell on earth. The tragic scenes are scary and sorrowful. Who said manwill triumph over nature? Who said these are just natural disasters?Who said they are not man-made calamities? When the earth shakes and hurricanes strike, what else can we do other than crying and having sympathy for the victims? Other than busying with disaster relief, shouldn't we face up to the truth behind the disasters? When more and more experts tell us that human beings are actually theculprit of these calamities, do we sniff at them or make a profoundself-reflection? We have been willfully enjoying the convenience brought by industrialtechnologies and development since the Industrial Revolution. Also, wehave recklessly emitted emissions that brought destruction to theecological balance, causing a serious greenhouse effect. "Other than busying with disaster relief, shouldn't we face up to the truth behind the disasters?" As one makes one's bed so one must lie on it, we are now suffering from what we have done! Experts said that the earthquake will be back a few months later and itis expected to affect China, Fiji and India. Also, the recent sixearthquakes of different magnitude scales in India might be a precursorfor a destructive earthquake of 8 magnitude or higher. The seismic waves of the massive earthquakes travel around the worldand the structure of some geological faults have become more unstablewith lower pressure-bearing capability. Our earth has becomeincreasingly unsafe. Don't think that this is a groundless fear. Under the threat of globalwarming, there will be no single piece of land that can be called theparadise on earth someday. Don't think also that Malaysia is a paradise on earth, which will neversuffer any major disaster as Malaysia is located outside the seismicbelts. Don't underestimate the experts' warning. The strata of the region havebeen found moving. It has become a possibility that earthquakes mayoccur in Malaysia because of the plate movements. Who would have thought that a minor earthquake would occur in Bukit Tinggi, Pahang in 2007? Who would have thought that Malaysia, which had “no earthquake, notsunami”, would be affected by the 2004 South Asian tsunami and dozensof lives had been claimed? When natural disasters and man-made calamities strike, should we keephelplessly anguishing over the misfortunes and praying for God'sblessings, or adjust the inveterate lifestyle and consumer inertia tocontribute our efforts in reducing the harm suffered by our planet?
