Volkswagen Scirocco GTS – racy looks inside out

Here’s a special edition of the Volkswagen Scirocco called GTS. Revealed at the 2012 Leipzig Motor Show, VW revived the GTS name from thirty years ago, when the Scirocco II wore the badge. VW says that the GTS was designed for European and Chinese markets, which means there should be no right-hand drive versions, for now.

Exterior differences include body stripes, red brake callipers, new front and rear bumpers, exposed side sills, body-coloured side trim, wing mirrors colour coordinated with the stripes, 18-inch ‘Thunder’ alloys with black trim, a diffuser and the rear tailgate spoiler from the Scirocco R, plus GTS badges on the front wings. Black 19-inch ‘Lugano’ alloys are optional.

Inside, today’s GTS comes with a golf ball gear lever, like the old one. Originally designed for the Golf GTI, the golf ball also adorned the Scirocco GTS between 1982 and 1984. You’ll only get this with the manual, though – no golf ball if you choose the DSG gearbox as partner to the 210 PS TSI engine.

Red double lap seams can be found on the seats, gear lever sleeve, hand brake lever, sports steering wheel, safety belts, central armrest and door armrests. There are also GTS logos on the front seatbacks and the edge of the floor mats.
