Two large explosions have hit an industrial area in the Chinese city of Tianjin, killing at least 17 people and injuring at least 300, according to officials and state media.
The first blast is believed to have involved a shipment of explosives and happened at around 11.30pm local time, state broadcaster China Central Television (CCTV) reported.
The state-run Beijing News said on its website that between 300 and 400 people have been admitted to hospitals in the city, which is to the east of Beijing.
Reports say many of those were wounded by broken glass and stones.
Fireballs from the initial explosion caused further blasts in premises close by, the state-run Xinhua news agency said.
The National Earthquake Bureau reported two large explosions before midnight, the first with the equivalent of three tonnes of TNT, the second with the equivalent of 21 tonnes.
Beijing News said the explosions shattered windows and knocked doors off of buildings in the area.
Videos and photos of the initial blast showed a large fireball, with a mushroom cloud rising into the night sky.
The official China Daily said the explosion happened at a warehouse for dangerous materials.
It added that the logistics company running the warehouse had proper approval for the business.
The broadcaster added there had been two explosions within 30 seconds of each other and that 100 fire engines have been sent to the scene.
Tianjin resident Zhang Siyu, who lives several kilometres from the site of the warehouse blast, said: "I thought it was an earthquake, so I rushed downstairs without my shoes on.
"Only once I was outside did I realise it was an explosion.
"There was the huge fireball in the sky with thick clouds.
"Everybody could see it."
Ms Zhang said she could see wounded people crying, and added: "I could feel death."
Han Xiang said: "It was like the earthquake back in 1976 with glass breaking.
"But then there was a huge mushroom cloud so we thought we were also in a war."
The fire has been brought under control, CCTV reported, although it is still burning.
Firefighters are searching the area for injured residents.
