Unesco wants Kelantan to lift ban on Mak Yong

KUALA LUMPUR: The Kelantan government has been urged to lift its ban on public performances of the “Mak Yong” dance and other traditional artistic Malay art forms.

The United Nations (UN) Special Rapporteur in the field of cultural rights, Karima Bennoune, said these cultures with rich tradition should instead be celebrated and appreciated as they were among the oldest performing arts in the world.
She said measures should also be taken to provide better understanding and explanation of the meaning of these practices and their long history in Malaysia, to overcome prejudicial views about them.

“Kelantan has a rich artistic tradition and the restrictions of other traditional art forms like wayang kulit, main puteri and dikir barat must also be lifted.
“Everybody should be able to enjoy it and people must learn to value and appreciate native cultures that have been around for centuries.

“Simply moving the practice of these art forms elsewhere, away from the very region where some of them emerged, is insufficient to guarantee cultural rights,” she told reporters at a special press conference on Malaysia’s cultural rights here today.
Mak Yong is one of Kelantan’s oldest traditions and recognised as a world heritage by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco).

The press conference was held to present Bennoune’s preliminary findings from her 11-day visit in Malaysia which ended today, to assess efforts to implement cultural rights and, in particular, the rights of people to participate in cultural life without discrimination.
Bennoune, who is here on the invitation of the Malaysian government, is mandated by the UN Human Rights Council to monitor, review and advise on cultural rights to all countries.

Meanwhile, Bennoune said there was a need to review and clarify the criteria for censorship of books and films and to make the decision-making process more transparent so as to guarantee people their cultural rights, including freedom of artistic expression in the country.

“Terms like ‘controversial’ or ‘sensitive’ are too subjective to conform to international standards on freedom of expression.
“In addition, more support should be provided for independent and documentary film producers, including platforms in national media,” she said.

Maaf dek, x berniat nak hina org Kelantan, cuma dituju pd pemerintah negeri yg bersikap jumud dan backward serta tak berdaya saing sehinggakan warisan budaya negeri sendiri pon nak diban. Budaya pengotor xnak pulak ban.

Ye dek. Cuba bayangkan 20tahun akan dtg, org dah lupa apa itu baju melayu, baju kurung. Yg diorang tau jubah, abaya, kurta. Malu agaknya nak mengaku Melayu? Tpi kecoh dgan ketuatnan meleis. Jijik kan?

X sure about banning the whole thing tp y dorg x kasi tu kalau lagu dan persembahan tu ada unsur2 pemujaan sebab zmn dulu persembahan2 ni digunakan utk memuja benda2 halus (my lecturer buat kajian psl wayang kulit so die gtaw ada certain restrictions tp bukan banned the whole thing,ok,let's get that part right)...dikir barat,wayang kulit,main puteri,makyong still lagi ada tapi based on my lecturer's research, pelapis y xde..org muda zaman skrg xramai y minat bnde2 tradisional..dorg sebok dgn gajet n bnde2 IT ni jee...

N then,caner org nak taw psl warisan budaya ni kalau asyik dimomokkan dgn benda2 negative aje dr kelantan?mcm kelantan ni mundur,kotor,penuh dgn jenayah,,korg x cite pasal positif,you just know how to criticize (opsss,silap...supposedly "condemned')  kelantan..cube ckp mcm educated sket,lau korg fokus pd bnde negative aje,mmg y tu je akan tersebar,walhal x semua kelantanese act like what you've been describing them as...mcm laa negeri lain pembersih n bebas dr benda2 negative ni...sori to say yee...simpan sket racism tu..

Dah Kelantan sendiri x promote benda tu, kau nak salahkan org lain pulak sbb portray negative image pada kelantan. Sendiri xnak usaha untuk perubahan nak salahkan org lain? Budu too much??

Erkk..butthurt much?y sy ckp psl negative things tu berkaitan dgn  how people portray kelantanese in general..do you think kalaupun klate tries to promote its culture org akan amek kesah?i don't think so sbb first impression dorg da di set kan klate ni tmpt y mundur...dorg ni cop mundur pun sbb xde cinema je,other facilities still cukup..lg satu psl mengagungkan budaya arab tu maybe boleh sstgh org je,n bg  cthpsl wearing jubah etc..helloo,sis,you duk   dlm gua ke?other people from other states pakai jubah,abaya bagai boleh pulak ek..tp kelantanese  xley ek..so double standard laa you..better pakai jubah drpd pakai pakaian  xsemenggah,or  y mencolok mata...n that also implies to the cleanliness as well..i  had my  fair share of having roommates who are non kelantanese but to hell with their cleanliness..sgt pengotor,melaram pndai pulak..you  x pernah fikir ke your statement is way overgeneralize  n that really reflects your inner side...but i won't judge you based on this ill-hearted feelings towards kelantanese,maybe youve had bad experience with kelantanese ...

Dulu di tahun 1970 an mak aii ckp tv Malaysia ada rancangan dondang sayang, boria, mak yong dikir barat dan wayang kulit.

Apa kata TV station yang ada sekarang wujudkan balik rancangan seperti ini. Mesti mendapat sambutan dari warga senior di Kelantan, Penang, Melaka etc.

Ini lah cara yang mudah utk anak bangsa mengenali warisan seni budaya kita.

Sekarang ni aku dah naik menyaampah dengan melayu nak jadi arab ni. Agak2 lah nak pakai pakaian arab pun. Jangan lah pakai jubah arab yang di pakai untuk tahan sejuk dalam cuaca malaysia yang panas kering ni.

Dri gaya nya kau yg butthurt much. Masalahnya Kelantan ada promote ke budaya sendiri? Xbuat lgi dah assume macam2, lepastu salahkan  org lain sbb assume negative. Anyway, mmg fakta pon Kelantan negeri yg kotor, don't try to deny that.
