IF YOU are looking for a cheap, practical city car with low running cost, cheap to buy and have decided that it must not be Malaysian made then, there is no argument that a used Suzuki Swift GL 1.0 is the answer. For a selling price of between RM9000 and RM14,000 (depending on condition), you can get a compact four-door notchback with central locking, remote releases for the fuel flap and rear hatch, 60/40 split fold rear seat, rear wiper/washer and very low fuel consumption.
With five doors and a rather stylish body, the Swift scores reasonably well on space and practicality. Luggage space is not big with the rear seatrests up, but these backrests can be folded in a 60/40 split to more than double the load area. This then allows for suitcases to go in.
For the average Asian of less than 183cm tall, front occupants have good leg and headroom but the seats offer only basic comfort and support. Rear legroom is better than average. As with most small cars, the Suzuki Swift GL has shortcomings in comfort, noise and harshness levels, on-road dynamics, and performance. However, there are redeeming features for the budget-conscious buyer who is concerned principally with urban commuting.
The amount of space inside is a big bonus, but the ride is too jarring and unsettled for long soothing highway journeys. The cabin is cheaply trimmed, with a poor finish and a tendency to rattle after some years. Large glass areas create a bright and airy cabin, and provide good vision for both driving and parking. The lack of power steering makes parking a bit difficult for non-gym users, but the steering weight is satisfactory once the car is moving along the road. Expect considerable engine and road noise from the Swift, due to the lack of sufficient sound insulation.
The small frugal engine only produces about 62bhp so it抯 just as well that the Swift is a relative lightweight at less than 850kg. Around town, the Swift will keep up with the general traffic flow provided you抮e not lazy with gear changing. With a fully loaded car, hills and using the air conditioning, they will take their toll on what limited performance is available.
Working the engine to get reasonable performance causes an increase in operational noise and it has a detrimental effect on fuel consumption. The Swift抯 handling is adequate for its intended role as a city commuter, but its limits become obvious if you start attacking corners too enthusiastically, or when travelling at higher speeds in a strong cross wind especially on the Malacca stretch of the PLUS highway.
Braking is another area where the Swift is just adequate. The front disc/rear drum brakes cope well enough with normal stopping requirements, but emergency braking could result in wheels locking, while prolonged heavy use may result in brake fade. Not a performance machine like its GTi brother, the Swift GL sits in the Perodua Kancil, Daihatsu Charade segment.
Many owners have, over the years, upgraded their Swift GL with Swift GTi parts from junkyards thus giving it more appeal and raising prices. Finding a stock GL will take time while a GTi convert will be easy to find. Rust is not a serious problem on the Swift but with accident damaged cars rust could be an issue. Engines should last well with proper servicing, though tired engines should be swapped instead of bothering with rebuilds as spares can be a little pricey. Interior trim does nor fare well with time and can start to look tired after more than 10 years.

act, semalam me n hubby dah test drive swift ni. not bad, syok...engine tak bunyi kuat, ikut kata salesman bleh reach 175-180KM...
yep, mcm mini cooper skit...ada yg dah modified semalam. siap skirting, leather seat, tinted, spot rim etc tak tau nak sebut...lawa giler....teruja teruja...
otr, 85++..suma auto, manual tak masuk gi...
