REVIEW EPISODE
Deadman Wonderland Episode 1 Review
I wasn't really sure what to expect going into this show, knowing only that it would be quite bloody given what its director has been saying prior to airing. On that count, Deadman Wonderland has delivered, but there's also plenty of mysteries to solve. Why was Ganta the only survivor when his class was massacred? Why was he framed for it after? Who is Mr. Tamaki, and what's his role in all of this? Who is the Red Man that actually wiped out Ganta's class, and why did he give Ganta his powers? So yeah, the first episode has done a very good job of setting up a ton of questions that are going to need answering.
The first episode did throw a fairly substantial amount of information at us, but it was reasonably easy to digest. It's obvious that Ganta has been framed, and it probably goes all the way to the upper echelons of government. The big question is why. I guess that's to be expected in a show about a high school kid going to prison. Why would he be sent? Personally, I'm more curious about Red Man, and the powers he imbued Ganta with. Is Red Man a psychopathic killer, and why give such power to Ganta? I'm also curious how Ganta will learn to use his abilities. It seems that they only activate when he's under a lot of stress, so they may not work all that often. Hopefully he'll be able to use them at will eventually.
Ganta himself I'm having trouble fully embracing at this point. Sure he's just a kid in the end, and being charged with mass murder when you know you're innocent would have a profound affect on one's mental state, but Ganta is feeling just a tad too mopey and sad in how he is dealing with everything. The amount of times he just started screaming and / or crying this episode was tiresome. It was actually a lot more enjoyable when he was just quiet and looked a little dead, like when he first entered the prison, and was being given an explanation of the place by Captain Makina.
This brings us to the other characters so far. We have albino mystery girl Shiro, who looks a lot like one of Ganta's friends who was killed. She seems to already know Ganta, and want to be friends with him. I'm assuming she'll be his oasis of calm in prison, as Ganta tries to cope with his situation. There's also Mr. Tamaki, who was Ganta's public defender, and who didn't seem to do a good job of protecting him during the court proceedings, and is now apparently one of the higher ups at Deadman Wonderland. As easygoing as he seems on the outside, you just know he has a rotten core. Just the way he carries himself gives that M.O.. Captain Makina hasn't had a huge presence of yet in the show, but she did give a bit of a dominatrix vibe in how she seemed all too eager to meet out pain and punishment, almost enjoying inflicting it. About the only concern that I have with these characters is that they feel a little too archetypal in terms of both what I'd expect from an anime in general, and a prison story in particular. Hopefully the show will expand on these people over time.
The show looks pretty good, though. The character designs are top notch, with Shiro being a front runner here with her more minimalist look, and Ganta is looking pretty good too with the prison jumper. The real highlight, though, is the environments. Given that Deadman Wonderland is part prison, and part theme park, this opens up a lot more possibilities in the sorts of places that the show can visit. Sure, there are gray, sterile areas behind the scenes, but the glimpses we've seen of Wonderland so far have been intriguing.
With that, the show has gotten off to a pretty decent start. While I do have some concerns about the characters, the overall theme of the show, and the odd mysteries it looks to solve seem interesting enough. If Ganta can pull it together a bit, and the rest of the characters break out of their mold a bit more, Deadman Wonderland could be pretty great.
Score: B+
