Abou Diaby has become the latest in a long line of Arsenal players to be struck down by injury.

The news that the midfielder has picked up a hip problem follows hot on the heels of disappointing setbacks for Theo Walcott and Robin van Persie.

Walcott recently damaged his knee in training and van Persie suffered a groin strain while on international duty with Holland.
The Dutch striker has returned to England for treatment but remains a major doubt for the Gunners' Premier League clash
with Manchester City on Saturday.

With Arsene Wenger's men still not assured of a top-four finish this season, the last thing the French coach needed was to see another first-teamer added to his list of walking wounded.

Diaby's knock is not expected to rule him out of action for long, but it has been deemed serious enough to sideline him for France's 2010 World Cup qualifier against Lithuania on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, with the problems beginning to pile up, Nicklas Bendtner has also returned to north London after suffering an injury scare.

The Danish striker suffered a knee injury while representing his country against Albania on Saturday.
No indication has been given as yet the severity of the problem.

Arsenal striker Robin van Persie urges club to match his ambition

Arsenal forward Robin van Persie is close to signing a three-year, £80,000-a-week contract at the club but will only do so if they match his ambitions.

Though maintaining that negotiations have been running smoothly and that his desire is to stay in north London, Van Persie is aware of interest from continental sides and has urged Arsenal to make the “final push” and invest in top level players to secure trophies.

The Dutchman has 18 months left on his current deal, though he is believed to be a target of Barcelona, one of several clubs taking an interest in his situation.

“In Spanish papers there are so many names mentioned and I haven’t heard anything concrete from Barcelona,” Van Persie told the Daily Mail.

“I can’t do anything about those rumours. I’m still in negotiations with Arsenal and it’s going well, in a very positive atmosphere. There are further meetings planned.

“Financially Arsenal’s last offer is fine but that isn’t everything for me. It’s about my ambitions and how they can be fulfilled.

“The club and I want the same and it’s our intention to achieve that. We have all the other factors in place: fantastic stadium, dedicated support and money in the bank. Now it’s about making that final push.

“In the last four years, I’ve only won one prize, the FA Cup, and that is too little. I want to push through to achieve more. That is something I feel in my mind and my body.

“It’s difficult to explain but I certainly feel I can play an important role in taking Arsenal to a higher level.”
