'Burdened' parents get hotlinesPUTRAJAYA: Headmasters and principals will be hauled up if they cannot explain the rationale behind the "unreasonably high payments" imposed on parents.
Education Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein said parents who felt that the payments were a burden should call the ministry's hotlines at 03-88888445/446/443.
They can also call 1-800-88-4774 or fax their complaints to 03-88888431.
He said the ministry had issued a circular dated Oct 30 on the maximum amount of contributions from parents to enable schools to carry out co-curricular and other activities.
For primary and secondary schools, the amounts are RM38.50 and RM55.50 respectively.
Starting next year, parents no longer have to pay for their children's textbooks and school examination fees as all this will be borne by the government.
However, they still have to make payments for co-curricular activities, computer classes and annual sports fees.
The poor need not pay.
"But if they want to contribute, they can do so by paying in staggered amounts," Hishammuddin said after chairing the ministry's post-cabinet meeting yesterday.
"As headmasters, they are leaders of their respective schools and they should be fair in deciding on the amount of contributions that should be made.
"If the complaints are genuine and they are found to have imposed such a high rate, they will have to explain. There will be no compromise on this," he said.
For next year's school terms, the ministry has set aside RM1.14 billion for its food assistance programme for school hostels, RM276 million for its additional food programme, RM181.94 million for the tuition scheme, RM26.7 million for the school milk programme, RM268.5 million for scholarships, RM13.8 million for special children, RM188.8 million for uniforms for poor students and another RM214.7 million for the poor students' trust fund.
He said residential school students whose parents earned less than RM600 a month would be assisted through the ministry's Fully Residential Schools (SBP) programme.
Under the programme, poor Form One students will be given RM700, Form Two (RM300), Form Three (RM350), Form Four (RM500) and fifth formers (RM450) to enable them to pay for hostel fees and other things.
He also said about 79.7 per cent of textbooks had been supplied to schools.
Students of private schools and Mara Science Junior Colleges can call the ministry's textbook help desk at 03-88844290 if there is a shortage of textbooks.
Hishammuddin also said the Malaysian Examination Syndicate would announce the date of the Penilaian Menengah Rendah examinations that would be pushed back later to keep students in school until the holidays begin.
In a move to curb truancy, schools from next year will hold year-end examinations in the last two weeks before the long school break.
The dates for the Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah will also be pushed back.
The ministry decided on this after complaints about increased truancy.
Many students said they skipped school as there was nothing more to learn and that teachers had also stopped teaching since the year's syllabus had been completed.
