Mother saves child by putting him at the back seat moments before fatal crash

ROMPIN (Bernama): Surawati Mohd, 33, who died in a crash at KM134 of Jalan Kuantan-Seremban on Thursday (Oct 3), was understood to have handed over her youngest son to another child seated in the back of the car just before the unfortunate event took place.

This was recounted by the victim's eldest son, Aryan Rizqy Muhammad Noor Idham, six, who along with his two younger brothers - Areesh Razeen, four, and Arfaan Rakeen, two - became orphans in just a blink of an eye.

Surawati's brother, Suwardi Mohd, 38, said Aryan Rizqy told him about it when he went to meet his three nephews who were all injured in the incident.

" 'Abang' (as Aryan Rizqy is affectionately called) told that mummy (Suriwati) carried his little brother and handed him over to the back before their car collided with a lorry," he told Bernama when met at the Muadzam Shah Hospital's Forensic Unit here Thursday.

Surawati and her husband, Muhammad Noor Idham Ramli, 31, were killed in the 5.30am incident when the Perodua Myvi in which they were travelling from Kuantan to Seremban skidded into the opposite lane, and crashed into a lorry carrying fertiliser.

Muhammad Noor Idham, who worked as a cashier, died at the scene after being trapped in the driver's seat, while Surawati was pronounced dead while receiving treatment at Muadzam Shah Hospital.

Suwardi said all the children had also been taken to pay their last respects to their parents, as the couple's family members had decided to bury them separately in their respective hometowns.

The body of Muhammad Noor Idham will be buried at Felda Lui Selatan 2, Bandar Seri Jempol in Negri Sembilan while Surawati's body will be taken to Kampung Gong Merawang, Rhu Muda in Marang, Terengganu. - Bernama

Honda Malaysia recalls 23,476 cars over Takata airbag inflator
AUTOMOTIVE

Honda City is one of the models which has been recalled to replace the Takata front airbag inflators.

KUALA LUMPUR: Honda Malaysia has issued a recall for 23,476 vehicles to replace the Takata front airbag inflators.
In a statement issued on Friday, Honda Malaysia said they were involved in previous recalls. All current selling models are not affected.

“Honda Malaysia sincerely apologises for the inconvenience caused to customers once again. As customer safety is always Honda’s top priority, the company believes this replacement is necessary as a precautionary action and urges affected customers to replace the defective Takata front airbag inflators as soon as possible, ” it said.
The company said the replacement of the defective Takata front airbag inflators was free of charge and the cost of the replacement would be borne by the company.

It said affected customers would receive notification letters from Honda Malaysia with the details of this recall and stock availability.
Honda Malaysia urged customers who receive these letters to send their vehicles to any of the 95 Honda authorised service dealers for inspection and replacement.
“The replacement of Takata front airbag inflator stock for these 23,476 units of Honda vehicles will be available in stages and Honda Malaysia is doing its utmost best to ensure 100% stock availability in the shortest period of time, ” it said.
This particular recall phase this year does not significantly change the total number of recalled vehicles as it involves replacement of inflators installed in vehicles previously subject to recall.
As at Oct 1, Honda Malaysia had completed more than 249,000 units of Takata front driver airbag inflator replacements, which translates to 91% completion ratio.
The total number of Takata driver and passenger front airbag inflator replacements completed is at more than 537,000 units or 89% completion ratio.

Juvenile elephant killed in hit-and-run accident in Kota Tinggi

By Mohd Sabran Md Sani - October 6, 2019 @ 7:24pm
KOTA TINGGI: A 6-year-old male elephant was found dead following a hit-and-run accident at Batu 13, Jalan Kota Tinggi-Mersing here, today.
The juvenile pachyderm is believed to have been struck by a vehicle at 8pm on Friday.
According to Johor director of the Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan Johor) Salman Saaban, the young elephant suffered severe injuries in the collision and died from its wounds approximately on Saturday night.
“(After being alerted to the discovery of the large mammal), a team from Perhilitan Johor rushed to the scene of the accident. They found the pachyderm’s body, which had begun to decompose, about 50 metres from the point of the collision,” he said in a statement here, today.
Salman said the young elephant had likely been part of a herd of 30 to 40 elephants dubbed “Kumpulan Gajah Panti”, which frequently crosses Jalan Kota Tinggi-Mersing, particularly at night.
“According to our records, there were five road traffic accidents involving elephants on this road in 2018, with one resulting in a fatality,” he said.
Salman added that Perhilitan Johor has placed “elephant crossing” signs at intervals along the highway to caution motorists.
He also called on drivers to be extra careful and alert when travelling along the road, particularly at night.

HSBC to cut up to 10,000 jobs in drive to slash costs
BANKING
Monday, 07 Oct 2019 6:43 AM MYT

LONDON: HSBC Holdings Plc is planning to cut up to 10,000 jobs as interim Chief Executive Officer Noel Quinn seeks to reduce costs across the banking group, the Financial Times reported on Sunday.

The plan represents the lender's most ambitious attempt in years to cut costs, the newspaper said, citing two people briefed on the matter. It said the cuts will focus mainly on high-paid roles.

HSBC could announce the beginning of the latest cost-cutting drive and job cuts when it reports third-quarter results later this month, the FT said, citing one person briefed on the matter.

Quinn became interim CEO in August after the bank announced the surprise departure of John Flint, saying it needed a change at the top to address "a challenging global environment."

Flint's exit was a result of differences of opinion with chairman Mark Tucker over topics including approaches to cutting expenses, a person familiar with the matter told Reuters in August.

The reported job cuts come after the lender said it would be laying off about 4,000 people this year, and issued a gloomier business outlook with an escalation of a trade war between China and the United States, an easing monetary policy cycle, unrest in its key Hong Kong market and Brexit.

Violence flares in Hong Kong as emergency rule spurs backlash
ASEAN+
Monday, 07 Oct 2019 9:04 AM MYT
By Stanley James, Alfred Liu and Tian Chen

HONG KONG (Bloomberg): Hong Kong suffered one of its most violent weekends since anti-China protests began in June, with demonstrators paralysing large swaths of the financial hub after leader Carrie Lam imposed emergency rule for the first time in more than half a century to ban face masks.

On a holiday weekend normally packed with tourists, the city's already reeling economy took another hit as banks, supermarkets and rail all cut service. MTR Corp., the rail operator, halted all travel except direct lines to the airport on Saturday for the first time since 2007. Train services remained limited on Monday, a holiday, with most stations closed due to vandalism. For the second time in a week, a teenage demonstrator was shot and wounded in scuffles with police.

Through periods of torrential rain Sunday, police battled with protesters who occupied streets, vandalised property and targeted businesses with links to the mainland. Some demonstrators reportedly gathered outside the People's Liberation Army downtown barracks for the first time.

"From the huge turnout today you can see people aren't abandoning us and the movement," said a 17-year-old protester who gave his name as Rocky, wearing all black and a mask on his face. "Hong Kong people would only be angrier and more united if she rolled out more measures under the emergency law."

The increased violence showed that emergency law did little to deter protesters fighting for greater political freedoms, including the right to choose and elect their own leaders. That leaves Lam and her backers in Beijing with a difficult choice: Either take more drastic steps that could further erode Hong Kong's autonomy from China and prompt a backlash, or come up with a political solution that is acceptable to most demonstrators.

"The government started a very bad and dangerous precedent in invoking the Emergency Regulations Ordinance to enact this anti-mask law," said Eric Cheung, a law lecturer at the University of Hong Kong and a member of the committee that elects the city's leader. "There is growing distrust against the government, against the police."

Hong Kong's financial markets will be closed for the public holiday on Monday. A 10th of the city's ATMs were vandalised, the Hong Kong Association of Banks said in a statement on Sunday, adding that the financial system had adequate liquidity for withdrawals.

Almost four months of growing discontent have taken their toll on the tourism and the retail industries, driving the city's $360bil economy toward recession. Financial Secretary Paul Chan warned in the Global Times last month that while Hong Kong likely entered a technical recession in the third quarter, the performance of the fourth will depend on whether the city can quell the unrest.

Tourism from China declined 42% in August as the value of retail sales fell by almost a quarter. Luxury goods such as jewellery and watches are common purchases by mainland tourists, and the value of those sales slid by almost half. Some smaller store owners have closed down: In Hong Kong's usually bustling Causeway Bay shopping district, one in 10 stores now stand empty, according to data from real estate agency Midland IC&I Ltd.

Protesters initially hit the streets in June to protest a bill that would've allowed extraditions to mainland China. While Lam finally withdrew the proposal in September, the protests have since expanded to include calls for an independent inquiry into police violence and greater democratic accountability in the former British colony. The protests have become almost daily events with regular violent clashes between activists and police.

Shot and injured

A 14-year-old boy was shot and injured Friday night during a scuffle between a plainclothes police officer and demonstrators who had attacked his car. Just days earlier, police shot and injured an 18-year-old man who had attacked them during the National Day protests.

On Sunday, violence flared again as protesters blocked roads and set fires. Video footage showed a bloodied man laying on a road after he was dragged out of the taxi he was driving through a crowd and stomped on by a group of protesters after the vehicle hit some of them.

"Public safety has been jeopardised and the public order of the whole city is being pushed to the verge of a very dangerous situation," the police said in a statement early Monday. "Police appeal to the public to report illegal acts and join hands to maintain public order."

The latest protests followed warnings from opposition leaders that Lam's decision to invoke a colonial-era emergency law to impose the mask ban would only further anger the government's critics.

The High Court denied an application for an interim injunction by all 24 pro-democracy lawmakers on the ban of wearing of face masks during protests, Radio Television Hong Kong reported. The court adjourned a hearing on their application for a judicial review of the government measure to later this month, it said. The application followed another court's rejection on Friday of a temporary suspension of the law sought by pro-democracy activists.

While Lam has promised to address the underlying causes of the unrest and faced critics in a town hall event last month, she has so far refused to address protesters' demands for greater democracy. Any solution requires the approval of Beijing, which is wary of any process that could produce a leader who challenges its rule over the city.

Over the weekend, protesters began targeting Chinese state-run companies including major banks. A. Lau, a 26-year-old graphic designer who has joined with other protesters in vandalising property, said the demonstrators were attacking government offices and "organisations against us."

"We are not irrational and we are not vandalising arbitrarily," he said. "We are venting our anger toward the authorities as they are not responding to us." – Bloomberg

LONDON: A man paralysed from the shoulders down has been able to walk using a pioneering four-limb robotic system, or exoskeleton, that is commanded and controlled by signals from his brain.
With a ceiling-mounted harness for balance, the 28-year-old tetraplegic patient used a system of sensors implanted near his brain to send messages to move all four of his paralyzed limbs after a two-year-long trial of the whole-body exoskeleton.

The results, published in The Lancet Neurology journal on Oct 3, bring doctors a step closer to one day being able to help paralysed patients drive computers using brain signals alone, according to researchers who led the work.
But for now the exoskeleton is purely an experimental prototype and is "far from clinical application", they added.
He said previous brain-computer technologies have used invasive sensors implanted in the brain, where they can be more dangerous and often stop working. Previous versions have also been connected to wires, he said, or have been limited to creating movement in just one limb.
In this trial, two recording devices were implanted, one either side of the patient's head between the brain and the skin, spanning the sensorimotor cortex region of the brain that controls sensation and motor function.
Each recorder contained 64 electrodes which collected brain signals and transmitted them to a decoding algorithm. The system translated the brain signals into the movements the patient thought about, and sent his commands to the exoskeleton.
Over 24 months, the patient carried out various mental tasks to train the algorithm to understand his thoughts and to progressively increase the number of movements he could make.
Commenting on the results, Tom Shakespeare, a professor at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, said it was "a welcome and exciting advance" but added: "Proof of concept is a long way from usable clinical possibility."
"A danger of hype always exists in this field. Even if ever workable, cost constraints mean that high-tech options are never going to be available to most people in the world with spinal cord injury." – Reuters

Masa tu Mama Abah dah sampai Tapah. Berdebar-debar rasa bila kata nak jumpa doktor masa tu.. Rasa nk terus terbang supaya cepat sampai sebab dah terfikir macam-macam.

RM150,000 lost to ‘angpow’ scammer
NATION
Tuesday, 08 Oct 2019
By NELSON BENJAMIN

JOHOR BARU: A woman who went shopping in a supermarket here ended up losing her life savings of about RM150,000 in a scratch and win scam.

The 70-something woman was walking around when she encountered a man who told her that angpows were being given out to shoppers.

It is learnt that the man asked her to pick one of the red packets.

He then informed her that she had won several hundred ringgit in cash and reward points.

The woman was elated to hear the news. However, the culprit dangled another carrot.

He told her that she would be able to double the amount if she bought more items at the supermarket.

The woman then went to a nearby bank and emptied her savings totalling more than RM150,000 to go on a shopping spree.

She then came back to see the man, who was waiting near the supermarket.

Sources said the suspect took the cash and told her to wait while he went to a moneychanger to change the notes into smaller denominations for her to make her purchases. After waiting a while, the woman decided to search for the man at the moneychanger.

To her shock, no one was there. The woman then lodged a police report.

In another scam, a woman in her late 60s lost almost RM900,000 after she tried to purchase a house in Skudai earlier this year.

It is learnt that the Singaporean wanted to own a home in Johor Baru and issued several cheques to a real estate company to purchase the home, which was mortgaged to a bank.

A few months ago, she discovered that the real estate company had been declared bankrupt and had failed to settle the debts with the bank.

The bank has since seized the house and put it up for auction. The woman lodged a police report after many attempts to recover the money failed.

A police official confirmed the cases and said investigations were underway under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating. Those with information about these cases are urged to contact the police hotline at 07-2212999.

‘Jim’ the chatbot helps Singapore bank hire for its wealth business
TECH NEWS
Tuesday, 08 Oct 2019 3:00 PM MYT
By Chanyaporn Chanjaroen

DBS Group Holdings Ltd says the artificial intelligence program introduced last year has sped up and improved the quality of initial screening for so-called wealth planners, entry level staff in its consumer banking operation. — Bloomberg

Singapore’s largest bank is getting help from a chatbot named Jim in its drive to select good candidates for its growing business advising customers on managing their wealth.

DBS Group Holdings Ltd says the artificial intelligence program introduced last year has sped up and improved the quality of initial screening for so-called wealth planners, entry level staff in its consumer banking operation.

About one-third of the candidates who passed Jim’s vetting went on to get jobs with DBS, compared with only one-seventh under the previous system which relied solely on human recruiters, according to Susan Cheong, the bank’s head of talent acquisition.

Under its chief executive officer Piyush Gupta, DBS has been trying to re-engineer itself from a brick-and-mortar bank so that it operates more like a technology company. DBS’s open application programming interface is one of the largest in the banking industry.

The chatbot is better at screening candidates because it has less bias than a human recruiter in assessing resumes based on age, gender or educational background, Cheong said in a recent interview. For example, humans have a tendency to unfairly favour candidates from a certain educational background if they have successfully recruited others from the same schools, Cheong said.

"Jim is fair because it uses the exact same logic filtering out the applicants at the first stage, so that everyone has an equal chance,” she said.

DBS is one of a growing number of global firms seeking to enhance their hiring process with artificial intelligence. A 2017 study by PwC said about 40% of the companies it surveyed are using AI to speed up and improve recruitment.

However, experts are divided as to whether bias can be eliminated completely from machine learning models, with some arguing that AI hiring tools are only as impartial as the people who feed data into the systems and interpret the results.

"The AI algorithms used to build chatbots today do not know who they will be speaking to or on what subjects or what conclusions to draw. This is all inferred from the data used to teach the chatbot,” said Scott Albin, data & analytics leader at PwC South East Asia Consulting.

"For this reason it is important that the humans creating the chatbot understand bias and fairness and are equipped with the right training and technical tools” to detect it.

Jim – short for Job Intelligence Maestro – has also shortened the recruitment process since he was switched on last year, Cheong said. On average, recruiters now take about eight minutes to assess a candidate, compared with about 30 minutes before the bank deployed the chatbot, she added.

That’s important because of the scale of DBS’s hiring for its wealth business. In 2018, some 5,000 applicants applied for 400-500 jobs as DBS wealth planners, who typically deal with the investment needs of the bank’s retail customers. After about 18-24 months, the planners get a chance to move on to more senior positions, which might include dealing with richer clients.

The DBS chatbot uses cognitive and personality tests to assess candidates, as well as answering questions on issues such as how soon the candidate will hear back from DBS, the length of any probation period, and career progression prospects at the bank. A human recruiter then looks at the resulting scores and takes the final decision on whether the applicant should proceed to a face-to-face interview with the hiring manager.

Read how the use of AI in job interviews is prompting calls for better disclosure

DBS doesn’t rule out further use of AI in later stages of the interview process, after the screening has taken place, Cheong said.

"While we currently don’t want to lose the human element in the recruiting process, we are open to exploring whether AI could be used during a face-to-face interview with shortlisted candidates in future.” – Bloomberg

Utusan Group ceases operations, staff told to vacate offices by 1pm Wednesday (Oct 9)
NATION
Wednesday, 09 Oct 2019 11:27 AM MYT

PETALING JAYA: Employees of Utusan Melayu (Malaysia) Berhad were told to pack up their belongings and leave the office by 1pm on Wednesday (Oct 9) as the cash-strapped company officially ceases operations.

Executive chairman Datuk Abd Aziz Sheikh Fadzir said poor cash flow, mounting debts and declining sales led to its board of directors on Monday (Oct 7) in approving the Creditor's Voluntary Liquidation proposal and appointing UHY Advisory (KL) Sdn Bhd as interim liquidator.

"This step had to be taken because the board of directors were of the view that the company is no longer solvent to continue business.

"For that reason, the company will cease operations on Wednesday, 9 October 2019," said Abd Aziz in a statement on Wednesday.
While the workers' last date of service is on Oct 31, they have until 1pm today to clean their work stations, pack up and return all company property including access cards and office keys.

Abd Aziz said that since a few years back, Utusan Melayu (Malaysia) Berhad had gone through the most critical business period since it started operating 80 years ago.

The situation worsened after May 2018, he said, adding that many efforts were made to put the company in a more stable position but to no avail.

Among the steps taken were to offer the Voluntary Separation Scheme (VSS) which saw more than 700 workers being let go, he said.

"The company has also sold off assets belonging to the company and group to support the capital and get a sufficient cash flow.

"However, the declining daily circulation of Utusan Malaysia and Kosmo! and the target of RM4mil advertisements per month which we failed to achieve caused Utusan's cash flow to become more critical," he said.

This not only caused the workers' salaries to be delayed but also unpaid debts, he said, adding that the company is now facing various legal actions by creditors.

The workers were also told that their eligibility for termination benefits was subject to the provisions of the law and that this would be handled by the liquidators.

The liquidators will be holding a briefing for all workers on Oct 30 at 3pm at the Dewan Besar Utusan, said Abd Aziz.

"Any further questions can be brought up during this briefing session," he said.

RM800mil to RM1.67bil to be spent on Free Breakfast Programme for primary schools
NATION
Wednesday, 09 Oct 2019 12:24 PM MYT

Reports by MARTIN CARVALHO, HEMANANTHANI SIVANANDAM, RAHIMY RAHIM and TARRENCE TAN

KUALA LUMPUR: Between RM800mil and RM1.67bil will be spent to provide free breakfasts to some 2.7 million primary school students nationwide next year, says Education Minister Dr Maszlee Malik (pic).

“Seven schools in four states are participating in a pilot project between September and November involving between 47 and 2,380 students.

“The pilot project involves urban, rural and Orang Asli schools which will be used as guidance for the Free Breakfast Programme to be implemented in primary schools throughout the country in January next year, ” he told by Sabri Azit (PAS-Jerai) in Dewan Rakyat on Wednesday (Oct 9).

He said two modules will be used for the programme which involves two different sets of menus.

He said the first module would require 30 minutes with a menu of a combination of cooked food and fruits.

“The second module would require 10 minutes and involves a menu of a combination of diary or healthy beverages and ‘ready to eat’ or ‘on the go’ snacks such as bread, cereals, biscuits, cakes and boiled eggs, ” he added.

Besides providing nutritious and healthy breakfasts to students, Dr Maszlee said that the programme will also provide the opportunity for teachers and students to bond when having breakfast together.

“Teachers will be able teach their students on healthy eating, being civic and table manners, ” he said, adding that students will be made to wash their own utensils.

“It is also good news for the teachers involved in the programme as they too will be provided with free breakfast, ” he said.

He added that a standard operating procedure will be implemented to avoid incidences of food poisoning.

He said that his ministry is working closely with five ministries and agencies including non-governmental organisations to implement the programme.

Earlier, Dr Maszlee said that some 70% of students skipped breakfast while the World Bank’s Report on Realising Human Potential noted that incidences of stunted growth in Malaysia was high.

The minister had announced the free breakfast programme in August aimed at ensuring that primary school students were provided with a healthy meal to start their day.

Young KL policewoman helps deliver baby... in a taxi

WBy New Straits Times - October 8, 2019 @ 8:30pm

KUALA LUMPUR: A police officer stationed at the Terminal Bersepadu Selatan (TBS) went beyond the call of duty on Monday when she helped deliver a baby in a taxi.

While walking her beat at the transit hub at 3.40pm, Lance Corporal N. Komathi, 27, was approached by a heavily-pregnant woman who had gone into labour, Bernama reported.

The officer instantly escorted the woman to the nearest cab stand, hailed a taxi and accompanied the woman as they set a course for the Canselor Tuanku Mukhriz Hospital.

But the baby began to crown during the journey, and Komathi had no choice but to assist in its delivery in the hastily-stopped vehicle.

Despite being a novice in delivering infants, the officer successfully helped bring a newborn male, weighing 3.7 kilogrammes, into the world.

The new mother and her baby were later transported to the hospital’s emergency unit, and they are doing well, Cheras district police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohamed Mokhsein Mohamed Zon said in a statement, today.

News of the unusual birth went viral on social media when a photograph of Komathi, with the mother and baby, was uploaded online. Netizens showered the police officer with praise over her actions.

Program Sarapan Percuma dijangka manfaat 2.7 juta murid seluruh negara - Maszlee

Squirrels' stash of winter walnuts causes car chaos
WORLD
Thursday, 10 Oct 2019  9:07 AM MYT

(Reuters): Squirreling away supplies for winter took on a whole new meaning for a couple in the United States, after they discovered a hoodful of walnuts and grass in their car.

Holly Persic was driving to a library in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, when she noticed the car seemed strange.

"My wife called me from Northland Library and said that her car smelt like it was burning, and was making a weird sound," Chris Persic said in a Facebook post that has since gone viral.

Holly opened the hood to find an engine full of walnuts neatly packed in grass, presumably stored there by squirrels over the weekend, when the vehicle had been parked in the open.

Chris spent almost an hour cleaning out "over 200 (not an exaggeration) walnuts and grass from under the hood", he continued in the post.

The couple seemed to take the incident in their stride.

"There's definitely an angry squirrel wife right now wondering where all the nuts went", Chris said. – Reuters

Uruskan wasiat, pembahagian harta elak waris berkonflik

Oleh Latifah Arifin
latifah @bh.com.my
