In the passing time which isn’t very long, we came to know about him from “Kimchi Cheese Smile”, and he left a deep impact on us during “Will it snow for Christmas?”, and he expanded his capabilities through “Giant”, “Dream High” which got hugely recognized, and captured the female audiences’ hearts with “The Moon That Embraces the Sun” and “The Thieves”. In the past, the Kim Soo Hyun whom we all knew to be the neighbourhood’s teenager has now become the guy who will forever be out of our reach, a man who can only exist in our dreams and hallucinations. During the year when ‘The Moon That Embraces The Sun’ has ended, every day, there must be numerous novelties and surprises continuously bursting out for Kim Soo Hyun this actor. He was praised for his ‘potential in acting’, ‘his talent and idol is co-existing together’, ‘he’s the star in advertising industry’. Countless praises, one after another including concerns from people, what was on his mind when he reads these? Continued after The Moon That Embraces the Sun, it’s ‘Secretly Greatly’ broadcasted interview, we wish to be able to uncover Kim Soohyun's deepest feelings and his emotions, and this is the reason why we hold this interview. In a quiet and serene evening, as the sky is raining, we were able to grab this opportunity to have a ‘heart to heart’ talk with Kim Soohyun
Q: Do you like rainy days? Kim Soo Hyun: I like the kind of weather which rains and then stop for a while, and rain and stop for a while. The kind of weather which will change whenever, like today’s weather. The rainy weather where you can smell the rain, i also love it. A few days back, the weather was very humid, and also the warmth of Spring could be felt too, I like the type of weather where there’s nature feel and smell. But for rainy weather…If the rain keeps on raining, I don’t like it.
Q: Seems like you’re sensitive to your five senses Kim Soohyun: A bit. Although I am not picky with my food anymore. In the past, because of the taste, I am very picky with food. Especially seafood, I can’t even eat a bit of it. But, one day i have friends who told me "If you do not eat seafood, then it’s equivalent to giving up 70% of the nice food on earth". "You are a real man if you ate before seafood"
(laughs)
As to whether if eating seafood will mean that I’m a real man, it still remains a question to me, but from that day onwards, I started eating seafood”
Q: Before meeting you, we went through all the interviews that you had before, although they are all similar in content, they all commented that “Kim Soohyun’s acting skills is very good”, “Kim Soohyun is very well-mannered”, “He’s so humble” and more. Do you think this describes you? Is this the real Kimsoohyun?
Kim Soohyun: i think it depends on the situation. Most people are like this, right? Behaving differently at home, and another different attitude at school, and another attitude during interviews, I feel that every person is the same. Especially when it’s interviews, it’s certain that more or less, they will only do actions that they have to do, and only said the words that they are expected / needed to.
Q: There must be actors and actresses that will not be discussed about even in interviews. But you… how do we say… more or less you made people felt that the answers that you give were all ‘by the book’, that kind of feeling. Kim Soohyun: me? ah… (looks at manager) looks like you are saying that i’m doing quite well in this interview is it? (laughs)
Q: (laughs) Seems that, are you someone who is very conscious about what others think about you? Kim Soohyun: Only for a year, which is last year, I was very self-conscious, I really mind it. I was so self-conscious till the extent because I was so worried that I was loss for words, I didn’t even dare to speak. Gradually, I wasn’t able to be able to meet new people / get to know them, it was very difficult for me. If the person does not break down the barriers, even if i come closer, it will become even harder.
Q: What is it that made those matters that difficult? Kim Soohyun: When i gotten too much love / attention all of a sudden, I had a heavy burden that i felt i was shouldering on my shoulders. My mood and emotions also became very depressed and serious. After that, I started feeling afraid, the more afraid i am, my emotional state became even distressed and depressed. I would always try to hid, escaping, and protecting myself, forcing myself that I have to be careful about everything. And it resulted into me, this Kim Soohyun, becoming a secret, and also i became even more frustrated. I felt that I have became very small. huhuhu… I really dislike that kind of circumstance, the kind of feeling that I have became very insignificant, makes me feel very, very tired.
Q: Last year, you gotten the most grand award on ‘One Hundred of Arts” Awards for TV section. Actually, i met a lot of people who got too successful as an idol at a early time. And because of it, they were unable to endure the huge popularity and disappointed everyone’s expectations. The most fortunate is, I feel that even though you are experiencing high volume of popularity, in the midst, you’re still able to maintain a certain degree of vigilance。
Kim Soohyun: Is it? I actually even have the kind of thoughts like “Am i not suitable to be an actor?….why am i so afraid?” Feeling very insignificant with oneself, when the emotional state hits the rockbottom, I even fear going out of my house. But a thought came to me one day that “No, I can’t go on like this!”, and from that day onwards, to release my own internal suppressed emotions, I will force myself to get out of the door, having the self initiative to meet up with friends. When my activities for “Secretly Greatly” has ended, I went back to school to study (after prolonged absence). I don’t have to purposely break the mold for school because I will still be able to find freedom. Thanks to the school life, I am able to hear frequently that I look so much better than the last time.
Q: It was heard that, you chose to be in acting career because you wanted to change your own ‘careful and introverted’ personality. But when you are acting, seems like because you wanted to let yourself have some kind of change, and you keep on searching for that change, what is that you’re searching?
Kim Soohyun: I’m struggling in acting because of life! (laughs)
Q: I feel that you can believe in yourself more, have more confidence in yourself.
Kim Soohyun: I do have confidence in myself, but the matter is, the more confidence i have, the more guts I will have.
Q: Then, when’s the time where Kim Soohyun has the most confidence?
Kim Soohyun: it’s when I let go of myself. When i let go of myself and act, its when i feel that I am overflowing with confidence. This time ‘Secretly Greatly’, acting as an idiot allowed me to let go of myself in many aspects, I felt very relaxed and enjoyable while acting that role. When we are meeting with people, there are certain codes of etiquette to abide by, especially for artistes, we have to be very alert and mindful of a lot of this and that. And acting as this idiot, I could release a lot of the kind of stress / suppressing feelings that I felt in my everyday lives.
Q: This is the first time where you filmed a movie, it must be very touching and also stressful. The movie is about to be released in the cinemas, how much are you feeling emotional about this, and how stressful are you affected by it?
Kim Soohyun: right now, i’m feeling emotional. Before filming, it was more of stress. This movie’s original work is from a comic that is very popular and well-knowned on the internet, so i kept on thinking that i have to act it out well, and this kind of thoughts alone brings a lot of stress. Secondly, because even though its my first movie, there are a lot of high difficulty level of action scenes, and these is also reasons why i feel very stressed. And also, i also have to practice North Korean’s accent, on some extent its like 1 person acting 2 characters, so the stress was really a lot that time.
Q: Your debut ‘Kimchi Cheese Smile’, your role was ‘The Country’s Childish King Representatative’, i believe this is also a role that help with acting out the role for ‘Secretly Greatly’ right
Kim Soohyun: It seems like from that time onwards, my internal side is more like that. (laughs)
Q: Jun Jihyun who just started to act, and the Jun Jihyun now, do you think there’s a lot of change?
Kim Soohyun: This is quite hard to say. Previously it’s because she’s an actor that was still a newbie, when it comes to acting, we can totally release ourselves to act, but now, the feeling’s like standing in a three why junction. Not really sure, but also not fully understanding it. Just because we understood a little, so it’s abit inconvenient. But also because we understood a little, its as though because we’re afraid and thus we started withdrawing from it. Now, it’s this kind of situation.
Q: Maybe its because of this reason, watching your acting, sometimes we can feel that you’re not just acting it seriously, you’re acting it with all your might.
Kim Soohyun: ah! yesterday! ‘Secretly Greatly’ screening, did i gave that kind of feeling for everyone?
Q: Oh…There’s a lot of people who has already recognized that “Jun Jihyun is an actress who has good acting skills and very hardworking”. But she was being called as the person who is “because i do not want to let people see any ‘holes’(imperfection’” thus shes being seen to be suppressing herself.
Kim Soohyun: “holes”…this isn’t something good that we should say about her, and i feel that this saying is very dangerous. From the start of last year, having acted before in “Kimchi Cheese Smile”, The Thieves’ youngest thief, then to ‘Secretly Greatly’ and more, having challenged different kind of roles. If the role is being structured to be very perfect, but the film / drama wasn’t able to get high ratings, that is something that we can’t control. But, if the film / drama project were to gain popularity, but the person who acted as the main lead in that film/drama was being criticized to have ‘holes’ (imperfection)? I rather the drama / film is not able to get high ratings, but we can’t just criticize someone using the term ‘holes’ (imperfection). To the me now, that is really a scary matter to me.
Q: In the past, you valued yourself ‘I’m not a child, neither am I a man, I’m more of someone who is transcending between a young teenager and a man”, then, what about now? Do you feel that you are still transcending in the middle? Because you said before that unconfirmed rumors is dangerous, which is why this question is asked.
Kim Soo Hyun: oh… but i really love the feeling of mystery. I don’t like words like “His career is…. his age is…. he is a second generation” kind, I rather “What is this kind of person like?” type. As to the person i am now, i am getting further and further from my young age, (strokes chin) even my moustache… too…
Q: When do you feel that you have become a man(adult). And when do you feel that you are a young teen (child)?
Kim Soohyun: its not by feeling, its by seeing. Sometimes there will be photos used for interviews, sometimes there will be photos used for posters, postcards etc. When I see myself through these photos, I will feel like, “my face shape is different now, my face structure has changed”, i will feel that i have grown up. But when i look at those photos, mysteriously I feel a bit hurt by them. Q: How come? Those photos also meant it’s a component of your career as an actor.
Kim Soohyun: As i look at last year’s photos and this year’s photos, there is really a big difference (laughs). It’s just….but these changes, it is only letting me felt hurt by it mildly, I am not scared actually. Facing these changes, I can’t do anything about it, I only feel that I’m more curious now, curious as to how the 30 years old’s Kim Soohyun will be like. Q: Suddenly thought of a phrase from ‘The Moon Embracing The Sun’ script Kim Soohyun: “Don’t you dare leave me!” this phrase? hahaha
Q: (laughs) in the movie, the way you used left hand to write, it left a very deep impression. Heard that you are originally a left hander, although the world of science are also having debates and discussions, saying left handers who use the right brain will be able to come out with impressive creativity. Do you think you have impressive creativity skills?
