Fabio Cannavaro and Gennaro Gattuso admit they got angry with their "superficial" strikers when the Czech result was still in the balance.
"One does struggle a little back there, as you want to see the game sealed up early and a little less showboating. Thankfully, Pippo Inzaghi scored in the end," said the Juventus defender after the 2-0 victory that sent Italy through.
"Our objective was to qualify in first place and we did, so we're all satisfied and I'd give us an eight out of 10."
Marcello Lippi switched to a 4-4-1-1 system for yesterday's decisive encounter, a decision that pleased Cannavaro.
"The Coach saw how we were and decided to introduce another midfielder, which was advisable considering the strength of the Czechs in the centre," he added.
"The defence was solid, but we are part of a team and have proved our worth throughout the competition so far, conceding only once and that was an own goal."
Gattuso admitted he was also cross with the forwards after Francesco Totti and Inzaghi wasted several good scoring opportunities when it was still 1-0.
"The worry was that we were wasting so many chances that in the end we'd lose our lead. I got a little angry at the relaxed attitude the forwards were taking, which was sometimes a little superficial, but thankfully Pippo scored at the end," said the Milan man.
The fiery midfielder maintained his reputation for firing up the crowd ? and his teammates ? when he pinched Lippi's face during the celebrations for Inzaghi's goal.
"Seeing as we've been working towards this adventure for two years, we were charged up to the hilt. Even if I exaggerated a little, it was how I express my joy! I can't tell you how nervous I was ? I went to the bathroom 12 times in the morning!"
Gattuso was booked for a challenge on Pavel Nedved, but all the yellow cards from the group phase will be wiped out when entering the second round and no Italians will be suspended for the next game.

Gigi Buffon: 7.5
Super in between the sticks for the Azzurri, Buffon made some crucial and fine saves throughout. Commanded his box and won his personal duel with friend Pavel Nedved.
Gianluca Zambrotta: 6Characteristically got forward but Zambrotta, this time fielded on the right, wasn? as influential as normal. His final pass and crossing was also not of his usual high standard.
Fabio Cannavaro: 8:tq: tabik sama canna
Immense yet again. Undoubtedly one of the best defenders in the tournament so far, there was no way past the Juventino. Even threatened to score with a volley of all things.
Alessandro Nesta: 6 (tak tau bila bole main)
Did seem to struggle in the opening phases where he looked unbalanced and unsure. His injury inadvertently paved the way for victory seeing as he was replaced by Materazzi.
Fabio Grosso: 5
Lippi, we have a problem! Recalled to the line-up after his struggles in the first game, Grosso pushed forward but left massive gaps at the back. Seemed heavy legged.
Andrea Pirlo: 5.5
Struggled badly in the centre of the park. There were no trademark searching passes and his sluggishness in possession could have proved costly. Too timid, he must do better.
Gennaro Gattuso: 6.5Took on Nedved in the opening stages with his usual gutsy performance. Always ready to close down opponents, his intelligent header almost rippled the net.
Simone Perrotta: 6Had an anonymous first half, but significantly improved after the Czechs were reduced to 10 men. Saying that, sticking him in a wide position does hamper his performances.
Mauro Camoranesi: 6
Confused while playing in a free role behind the two strikers, was a little more reliable when reverted to his usual flank role. Decent, but nothing to write home about.
Francesco Totti: 5.5Admittedly crossed for the opening goal and almost scored himself, but this is not the real Totti. How many chances can Lippi afford to give him?
Alberto Gilardino: 6
Again put himself about during the game without making too much of an impact. However, with little support up there, what more could he have done?
Marco Materazzi: 7The surprise of the day. He easily slotted into defence alongside Fabio Cannavaro, scored his first international goal and there was no dodgy tackle in sight. :lol Our compliments to Marco?
Simone Barone: No vote
Came on near the end of the game to bulk up the midfield. Not given enough time to make a telling contribution.
Pippo Inzaghi: 7
Made sure of the points with a typical Inzaghi goal, but only after he missed two sitters. Thanks to his fresh legs, he could be Italy's super sub in this tournament.
Marcello Lippi: 6.5
The side didn't play great but a win is what counts. Made the right decision in dropping Zaccardo, the problem is that he only has one Zambrotta. His subs rewarded him with goals, even if his insistence on playing this Totti could be the Azzurri's eventual downfall. |

memandangkan nesta injured untuk next match ni (n ntah2 lagi 2 minggu pun tak elok lagi..) nampaknya italy mmg kena lupakan nesta 4 the time being.. centre back kita nampaknya matrix la buat sementara waktu (pls pls pls matrix jgn buat tackle2 yg bodo mcm selalu tu).. if anything happens to him.. next option is andrea barzagli yg masih fresh tu..
so sad that nesta's journey this werkl kap tak panjang... harap2nya takler kena tunggu sampai 2 minggui.. dah habis werl kap tu..
hmmm.. semoga dapat kalahkan team guus hiddink ni... (he alwys reminds me of the korea match incident :geram: ) |
