Cologne beats Hannover 2-1 in Bundesliga on Friday
FRANKFURT, Germany - Cologne ended a four-game losing streak against Hannover when it rallied to win 2-1 in the only Bundesliga match on Friday.
Visiting Hannover went ahead after 15 minutes when Jan Schlaudraff slotted the ball home from 20 yards out. But Pedro Geromel tied the score in the 43rd when the ball barely crossed the goal-line, and Wilfried Sanou sealed the victory in the 72nd with a deflected shot.
The win allowed promoted Cologne to climb provisionally to sixth place. |

Bayern Munich takes on Schalke in Bundesliga action Saturday
FRANKFURT, Germany - With four straight wins in the Bundesliga, Bayern Munich has climbed to third and Juergen Klinsmann's team has to maintain the momentum against Schalke if the defending champion wants to keep up with the high-flying newcomers from Hoffenheim.
Hoffenheim is riding a five-game winning streak and has 25 points after 11 rounds. Bayer Leverkusen has 24 and Bayern 23.
While Leverkusen plays on Saturday in Karlsruhe, Bayern and Hoffenheim are on the road as well, but on Sunday. Bayern travels to fourth-placed Schalke (11 a.m. ET) while Hoffenheim visits Hertha Berlin.
"This is probably the most difficult game we have before the winter break," Bayern defender Martin Demichelis said. "We can't afford any slip-ups, Leverkusen and Hoffenheim are very consistent."
Schalke also considers Sunday's game as one of the crucial showdowns before the break.
"The team that wins this game will surely remain quite high until the break," Schalke's managing director Andreas Mueller said. "The losers will find themselves in somewhat of a hole."
Bayern had a sputtering start in Klinsmann's first season as coach but the defending champion is quickly recovering ground.
Unlike Hoffenheim, which has been delighting crowds with its high-paced, high-scoring style, Bayern has been labouring and has relied on the inspiration of Franck Ribery, who has three goals in the last three Bundesliga matches.
While Bayern has to spread out its energy between the Bundesliga and the Champions League, Leverkusen and Hoffenheim have no such worries and can concentrate solely on the league with plenty of time to recover between games.
Counting European play, Bayern has won five of its last six games and is coming off a scrappy 1-1 draw at Fiorentina in the Champions League on Wednesday. Bayern needs one more point from two games to advance to the next stage.
Schalke is undefeated in its last five Bundesliga games, although three of them were draws. But the last two were wins with a combined 5-0 goal difference.
Schalke is only one point behind Bayern and is ahead of Hamburg on goal difference.
Bayern's problem so far has been the defence, which has conceded 17 goals - while it allowed only 21 the entire last season in winning the title.
"For a few weeks we did not play well in the defence, we were not so watertight as last season," Demichelis said. "We made many changes, we tried out a three-man defence, then we returned to the back four. Slowly, it's getting better."
Schalke was confident ahead of the game - and has the stingiest defence in the league that has allowed only eight goals so far.
"I don't think we can lose at home," defender Heiko Westermann said. "After our last two wins we can go into this game with our heads high. ... Over the next weeks a few teams will move ahead in the standings and we want to be among them. Our goal is to win the title."
Cologne kicks off the 12th round Friday against Hannover. On Saturday, it's Hamburger SV versus Borussia Dortmund, Wolfsburg versus Energie Cottbus, Bochum versus Werder Bremen and Arminia Bielefeld versus Borussia Moenchengladbach. Eintracht Frankfurt visits Stuttgart on Sunday.

Löw To Lay Down Law
German national team coach Joachim Löw will hold a clear-the-air meeting with his entire squad ahead of next week's prestige friendly against England.
Joachim Löw is planning a meeting with the German squad to iron out a few contentious issues before the friendly international against England.
Foremost on the agenda will be the importance of resisting the temptation to vent frustrations through the media, the high-profile fall-outs between the coach and Kevin Kuranyi, Torsten Frings and Michael Ballack having shed a particularly bad light on a team that has prided itself on the ethos of unity.
Löw has always advocated open and honest communication between the players and management, but understandably is very averse to having the team's dirty laundry aired out in the open.
"It is important for me to discuss this issue and set a few things straight on the way to the 2010 World Cup," he said in a recent interview with Kicker magazine.
"I will liaise with the clubs and try to get all of my players to Berlin, even if they cannot play against England due to injury." |

Glenn Moore: Hoffenheim's style revolution spices up the BundesligaAt the turn of this century 1899 Hoffenheim, the club that represents a south-west German village of 3,000 people, were competing in the fifth-tier Verbandsliga Nordbaden. Given the regionalisation in German football, this is akin to playing no higher than the Ryman League, or England's seventh tier.
This morning Hoffenheim sit atop the Bundesliga, level on points with corporate-backed Bayer Leverkusen and ahead of Jurgen Klinsmann's Bayern Munich and Martin Jol's Hamburg.
Obviously there is a millionaire involved. Step forward Dietmar Hopp, 67-year-old co-founder of software giant SAP, currently rated 1,062nd-richest person in the world by Forbes magazine, with an assessed net worth of $1bn ( |
