IENA, April 22 (Serie A) - Internazionale were crowned champions of Italy for the first time on the pitch since the 1988-89 season as Marco Materazzi once again showed his ability to shine on the big stage.
Materazzi scored both goals for Inter either side of Paolo Negro's strike for Siena to ensure the Nerazzurri defended the title they were awarded by a disciplinary committee last summer following match-fixing punishments for Juventus and AC Milan.
The result proved good enough as the only other team still in contention, Roma, lost 2-1 to Atalanta in Bergamo.
With Juve relegated and Milan among several clubs handed points deductions, Inter's dominance of Serie A has been breathtaking with only one defeat so far and the title sealed with five matches to spare.
And it completed a memorable year for Materazzi who is a prolific goalscorer for a defender.
Materazzi was perhaps the key player in last year's World Cup final for Italy, conceding the penalty from which France took the lead but then equalising and also scoring in the penalty shootout victory.
All that was somewhat overshadowed by the incident which saw France star Zinedine Zidane sent off for headbutting Materazzi in the chest following verbal provocation from the Inter defender, whose disciplinary record is not the best.
Siena, who are not yet safe from relegation, started well and served immediate notice that Inter would have to work to achieve their aims.
After two minutes Daniele Corvia forged an opening for Alberto whose weak shot was saved by Julio Cesar.
Materazzi then released Zlatan Ibrahimovic whose shot was saved by Siena goalkeeper Alex Manninger.
Ibrahimovic then spurned another chance as he lost control at the crucial moment after a clever dribble.
Materazzi then opened the scoring for Siena after 18 minutes when he scored from close range after a scramble following a corner.
But Siena hit back when Daniele Galloppa's cross was headed by Negro past Julio Cesar.
After the interval, Siena's Leandro Rinaudo headed an Alberto free-kick over.
With Inter fans aware that Roma were losing to Atalanta, the second goal was what they were waiting for.
It came after an hour when Manninger fouled Julio Cruz, allowing Materazzi to convert from the spot.
Siena did not give up and Corvia headed wide from an Enrico Chiesa free-kick.
Materazzi could have had a hat-trick but his diving header from a Maxwell free-kick went over.
At the final whistle muted celebrations started but they soon took on a joyous note when the players and supporters learned that Roma had lost to Atalanta.
Champions with five games to spare, Inter finally know what it's like to win the title on the field - a feeling the club has not known since 1988-89.
That year it was Giovanni Trapattoni's team, featuring German trio Lothar Matthaus, Jurgen Klinsmann and Andreas Brehme, that triumphed. |

Zlatan Ibrahimovic says he turned Inter Milan into champions this season.
The big Swede said: "I won with Ajax, with Juventus and now Inter.
"As I said when I got here - where I go, I win.
"My mentality is a winning one. I am simply not happy when I lose, whatever the circumstances."

at last,we have secured our 15th scudetto..to be honest,aku taklah hepi sgt wlupon dan menang scudetto..mungkin atas disebabkan faktor2 nih:
1.no juve
2.milan kena points deduction
3.GAGAL MENANG LAWAN ROMA KAT SAN SIRO ARI TUH..hampeh boto..kalau menang ari tuh baru la ade style sikit..secure scudetto kat san siro..kan best..
4.loss to roma = record unbeaten season nih hancur lebur..bengong!
emm..tapi dah menang dah pon..so aku pon agak lega la..lately form inter pon cam hampeh giler jer..cant wait for next season..sure ade big signings nyer..titi henry ke,quaresma ke..hihihi..
kalau bole aku nak inter menang gak coppa italia season nih..mesti kalahkan roma..tak puas ati la aku kalah ari tuh.. |
