Based on the true story of George and Kathy Lutz, "The Amityville Horror" remains one of the most terrifying stories ever because of one small fact - it actually happened! Unlike many horror movies these days, "The Amityville Horror", stands in the same league as "The Exorcist" in that both these films are based on true real-life events.
However, unlike "The Exorcist", writers and producers have had the benefit of concrete facts that were documented by George and Kathy Lutz, who experienced first-hand the horrors in Amityville.
This film is created for today's contemporary audience. The original "The Amityville Horror" achieved staggering success on many levels after its wildly successful opening on 16 July, 1979. Audiences then were horrified by the story, based on the true-life account of George and Kathy Lutz who lived at 112 Ocean Avenue in Long Island, New York, in 1974.
About a year earlier, it was in this house that Ronald DeFeo, Jr. woke up in the middle of the night and murdered his six family members. When questioned, he claimed that deafening "voices" made him do it.
28 days after moving in, the Lutz family abandoned the residence, lucky to escape with their lives. They certainly went through something harrowing because they never went back to the house to pick up any of their personal belongings. Not a thing. They left and never went back.
The producers begin this film by acquainting the audience with the lives of George (Ryan Reynolds) and Kathy (Melissa George). You will probably come to like them as the movie progresses. However, your feelings towards George will change somewhere in the middle of the movie.
The original movie did not use physical characters to represent the spirits at work in the house but this version does. Unfortunately, the physical characterisation of the spirits does seem to reduce the impact of the original movie as most audiences would be fairly immune to ghastly looking and blood-covered humans wearing costumes.
Nevertheless, the lone fact that this movie is based on a true-to-life account of George and Kathy is enough to give anyone the shivers. Fortunately, for most part of the film, the producers have been fairly successful in amplifying this to create a horror film that will have ladies clinging on to their boyfriends at many different points in the movie.
Melissa George, who plays Kathy Lutz, is quick to observe several strange coincidences during the making of this film. For one, the house in which this film was shot was located in the town of Salem, which is also the name of the town the DeFeos were from. "The thing that freaked me out the most, though, was that Kathy Lutz passed away during the second week of the filming. She was only 59 years old and I though it was such as strange coincidence," she confesses.
