Media interest unsettling West Ham United

13:30 9/19/2006

Nigel Reo-Coker admits the media coverage surrounding Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano is unsettling West Ham United Football Club.

The footballing world was stunned when the two Argentina internationals arrived at Upton Park from Corinthians on transfer deadline day, as the pair had previously been linked with the likes of Chelsea and Manchester United.

The Hammers have failed to win any of the three games they have played since the double signing, and midfielder Reo-Coker admits the media attention surrounding the club has been unsettling.

"We are not used to such coverage and we have some high-profile players at West Ham now and that has been a bit unsettling," said Reo-Coker. "We are just a young side in The Premiership trying to be the best we can be.

"All we want to do is play our football and let the likes of Chelsea or Arsenal take all the headlines and the coverage while we get on with our team effort. It is a new experience for all of us.

揑f we want to make ourselves such a big club we need to get used to it."

West Ham midfielder Javier Mascherano and Middlesbrough's Fabio Rochemback have been linked with fallen Italian giants Juventus.

Juve coach Didier Deschamps revealed today: "Until the final day of the market we tried for a midfielder who is now playing in England.

"We still hope he arrives in January."

Tuttosport says Mascherano, Rochemback and Chelsea youngster Lassana Diarra were all on Juve's shopping list last month.

McCartney officially a Hammer

Former Sunderland George McCartney has passed a second medical and formally joins West Ham, it was announced on Wednesday. The Northern Ireland international underwent a medical in August but did not join due to a knee injury, which has now cleared up.

Versatile defender McCartney, 25, has joined on a four year deal.

He told the West Ham official website: "I think I am about two to three weeks from getting back into full training at which point I will play some reserve games to get me back to full fitness then it will just be a case of pushing for the first team.

"It was strange how things happened when I first signed, still being up in Sunderland for my treatment, but now I have been down here for a couple of weeks and all the lads have been top class and have looked after me.

"The manager and his staff have made me feel really welcome too and I am just delighted to be here. Now I just want to put my head down and work hard at getting into the first team."

McCartney becomes the East London club's eighth signing of the summer, joining Argentine starlets Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano, England Under 21 international striker Carlton Cole, Ghana defender John Paintsil, England goalkeeper Robert Green, USA defender Jonathan Spector, former Preston full back Tyrone Mears and ex-player Lee Bowyer at the Boleyn Ground this season

Scunthorpe United 1-2 Aston Villa    Wed, Sep 20 2006 21:59

Goals either side of half-time from Juan Pablo Angel gave Aston Villa the advantage but Billy Sharp's late header provided a scare.
Villa were the visitors to Glanford Park with the memory of last year's defeat to Doncaster fresh in their minds, especially as Scunthorpe have an impressive defensive record of late conceding only one goal in their last four outings.

The game started at a frantic pace with Villa dominating possession but surprisingly it was Scunthorpe who created all the chances in the opening exchanges. The visitors then began to find their attacking feet and started to carve out chances. Angel hit the woodwork twice in as many minutes when he should have scored.

The opening goal came via the penalty spot as Luke Moore was felled after collecting a long ball from Thomas Sorensen's mighty kick. Angel stepped up and missed his first attempt but the rebound fell kindly to him and he converted from eight yards.

The second half began as the first finished, free-flowing football was played by both teams but it was Villa who extended their lead with Angel's emphatic header from 12 yards after a pinpoint Aaron Hughes cross from wide on the right.

Scunthorpe rallied and created some decent chances but found Sorensen in fine form, the Great Dane produced a string of impressive saves to keep the home side at bay. They did get on the scoresheet however as on 74 minutes Sharp rose well in a crowded area to head home from a corner to create a tense final 10 minutes for the Midlanders.

LEEDS, England (AP) - Leeds manager Kevin Blackwell was fired Wednesday, with the club lodged 23rd in the 24-team League Championship.

Leeds came within one game of being promoted last season to the Premier League, losing a playoff to Watford.

But the club has won only one of eight league games this season. The final blow for Blackwell came Sunday when Sunderland, under new manager Roy Keane, beat Leeds 3-0 at home.

Blackwell has been in charge for 2 1/2 years and inherited a club plagued by financial problems. Many top players have been sold to reduce the club's debt.

Leeds was relegated from the Premier League to the League Championship - the division below - after the 2003-2004 season. In 2001. the club reached the semifinals of the prestigious Champions League.

Carver's mission

Sep 22 2006

By The Huddersfield Daily Examiner

JOHN CARVER has been appointed Leeds United caretaker manager after the departure of Kevin Blackwell.

The 42-year-old will be assisted by Dave Geddis and work in conjunction with technical director Gwyn Williams.

Carver, Blackwell's second in command, had a spell as Newcastle caretaker boss after Bobby Robson was sacked in 2004.

Former Charlton boss Alan Curbishley is favourite with the bookmakers to take over at Elland Road, but Swindon's Dennis Wise has also been linked.

Leeds are at home to Birmingham tomorrow.
