Man U legend says Ronaldo will have to brave the boos
LONDON, (AFP) - Cristiano Ronaldo is likely to face a hostile reception at the start of the new English Premiership season but will have to brave the booing, Manchester United legend Sir Bobby Charlton warned on Tuesday.
Charlton added that running away from the problem by leaving Manchester United would have made the young Portuguese winger's problems even worse.
Ronaldo returned to Manchester United training on Monday following an eventful World Cup in which he shined as a player but was roundly jeered from the stands.
England supporters were enraged after the winger apparently tried to influence the referee to send off his United team mate Wayne Rooney during Portugal's quarter final victory.
Rooney initially expressed his "disappointment", but later reportedly made up with the 21-year-old.
"Cristiano realises he has made a mistake which he will have to pay for," Charlton, now a United director, said at the launch of a project to tackle depression in young men.
"I am sure the fans will have a little go at him at the start of the season," he said.
"He is only a young lad. He is inexperienced and doesn't know a lot about the game. But he will come back better because of this.
"It is going to be tricky for him at the beginning but he is a great player and that is what people should focus on."
After England's defeat, Ronaldo was also heckled by supporters from other nations in his next two World Cup matches.
He also made no new friends among United's fanbase by announcing he wanted to join Real Madrid, plans his current club swiftly quashed.
Escape would have been a mistake, Charlton said.
"I don't see how he could have solved that problem in any other way than coming back to us," he said.
"If he had wanted to go and forced us to send him off to Real Madrid or wherever, he would have had the same problem and it might never have gone away.
"The only way it will ever go away is by coming back here, playing alongside Wayne Rooney, doing well for Manchester United and by being seen to be working really hard to put right the little errors he has made."
Charlton added that he had never expected Ronaldo to leave.
"I did not have it in my mind he would go anywhere else, never, ever," he said.
"Maybe his agent was trying to find somewhere for him to go but I never took it too seriously that he would leave.
"Cristiano is a good player and he is our player."

Manchester United are considering switching their sights to Corinthians star Carlos Tevez to fill the void left by Ruud van Nistelrooy.
The Manchester Evening News says the Reds have met with stubborn resistance from Atletico Madrid, who are insisting on a ?25m price tag for Torres, and Juventus have slapped a ?28m fee on another possible target, Swedish enigma Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
But Tevez, who had been expected to join Chelsea, could be a cheaper target for United after claiming he is being forced out of his club Corinthians by mounting fan pressure.
Tevez, who is friends with United's Gabriel Heinze, appears desperate to get out of Brazil, saying: "My daughter Florencia is very scared and my wife is too. They are very sad. Things which the Corinthians supporters did, are not easy to forget.
"If I was single, I would be in Brazil for one more year. But I have to talk with my family."

Ferguson worried about forward options
02 August 2006
Sir Alex Ferguson has conceded that Manchester United might be short of frontline options after the transfer of Ruud van Nistelrooy to Real Madrid. However, Ferguson has hinted that he may promote from within rather than make an immediate splash in the transfer market. "Well, we have one or two decisions to make about that For instance, [Giuseppe] Rossi." |

Man Utd's Pique keen on Zaragoza
tribalfooball.com - August 03, 2006
Gerard Pique is waiting to learn if Manchester United will allow him to join Real Zaragoza on loan.
Zaragoza are hoping to recruit the teenage defender for the season, but are awaiting talks with United boss Sir Alex Ferguson.
Pique's agent Arturo Canales confirmed he is now waiting for the thumbs-up from Ferguson to follow through with the deal.
"If Gerard leaves Manchester it will be to go to Zaragoza, since it is a dream project for him," Canales told El Periodico.
"It has the possibility of playing and that is what he wishes.
"We want to speak with Ferguson to see if he wants to have the player and if he gives us a good reason for wanting him to stay." |
