MONTEVIDEO: Uruguay menebus kekalahan pada peringkat separuh akhir Piala Dunia tahun lalu dengan menewaskan Belanda 4-3 menerusi penentuan penaliti dalam satu perlawanan persahabatan yang terikat 1-1 pagi tadi.
Penyerang Uruguay dan Liverpool, Luis Suarez membuka jaringan lapan minit sebelum wisel penamat sebelum Belanda menyamakan kedudukan dalam masa tambahan menerusi rakan kelab Suarez, Dirk Kuyt. Namun, Belanda gagal dalam penentuan penalti apabila Robin van Persie dan Eljero Elia tersasar dan pasukan tuan rumah memastikan kemenangan apabila Alvaro Pereira menyempurnakan percubaannya. Keputusan itu menamatkan rekod tanpa kalah Belanda selama 10 perlawanan sejak tewas kepada Sepanyol pada final Piala Dunia. - AFP

Liverpool Confirm Henderson Signing
Liverpool FC have today confirmed the signing of Jordan Henderson from Sunderland. The Reds agreed a reported £16m fee for the player on Tuesday evening, and have now completed a deal after the player underwent a medical and agreed personal terms yesterday.
The full statement from the club is as follows:
“Liverpool Football Club have completed the signing of Jordan Henderson after the 20-year-old passed a medical and agreed personal terms.
Henderson travelled to Merseyside on Wednesday after a fee was agreed with Sunderland. He then underwent a medical examination in Liverpool before signing a long-term deal.
The midfielder has now joined the England U21 squad in Denmark as they prepare for the European Championships.
Henderson’s first game after completing his transfer is likely to be against Spain U21s on Sunday.”
The player himself expressed his delight at the deal, insisting the club is on track to greatness once more.
“The club’s going in the right direction and it can go as high as it wants.” he said. |

Liverpool have made a bid of £5m for Arsenal left-back Gael Clichy, according to The Times. The player’s current contract expires in 2012 and he is thought to be angling for a move after 9 years with the Gunners.

Pep Guardiola Lauds Liverpool Academy
Pep Guardiola has issued a glowing review of the Liverpool youth system after holding an interview with Catalan Radio. The Barcelona coach has arguably the world’s best academy at his disposal, with many regarding Arsenal’s young guns as contenders.
However, Guardiola believes that it is Liverpool who have the only academy that can challenge his own – a sentiment that he was keen to share during a recent interview:
“The academy of the Liverpool is the only one that can compare to La Masia of Barcelona FC.” he said.
The double winning coach then went on to state: “If Liverpool can manage those lads in the academy, then maybe 20 star players can arrive from that academy”.
Rafa Benitez’ marmite approach to football is one that still has the Anfield faithful split between those who laud his time at the club, and those who rejoiced at his exit. But the legacy that he left behind is testament to his managerial ability and vision for the club’s future.
Thanks to his hard work, and that of Jose Segura and Rodolfo Borrell – both of whom were poached from the Barca ranks – as well as Frank McParland and Kenny Dalglish, Liverpool finally have an academy set-up which is envied the world over. |
