ROME - Defending champions Inter thrashed ten-man Roma 4-1 at the Olimpico to move three points clear at the top of the Serie A table.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic opened the scoring from the penalty spot after Giuly was red-carded for hand ball.
Simone Perrotta struck a second-half reply for the Giallorossi who were finished off by three quick goals from Hernan Crespo, Julio Cruz and Ivan Cordoba.
Roberto Mancini opted for a surprise 4-3-3 lineup, flanking Ibrahimovic with Cesar and Figo in a three-pronged attack in front of midfield trio Stankovic, Dacourt and Cambiasso.
Roma made the brighter start and could have taken an early lead but Julio Cesar kept out Totti's thunderous free kick and Mancini's left-footed follow-up shot.
The Nerazzurri's first chance fell to Ibrahimovic who shielded from Mexes and turned quickly before sending a weak shot at Doni.
Inter kept up the pressure and went close again when Cambiasso tested the Roma custodian with a volleyed effort from the edge of the box after Zanetti's right-wing cross spun off Juan.
The breakthrough came after a counter-attack on 28 minutes. Doni parried a Cesar shot and Giuly was shown a straight red for handling Ibrahimovic's subsequent header. The Swedish forward dispatched the resulting penalty low to Doni's right to put the Nerazzurri in front.
Inter lost Ibrahimovic and Dacourt to injury early in the second half. Mancini threw on Argentine forwards Crespo and Cruz and reverted to a 4-4-2 formation.
Roma took advantage of the Nerazzurri's tactical switch and equalised through Simone Perrotta who lashed home from close range after a defensive mistake by Maxwell.
But the Giallorossi's leveller was short-lived as Inter stepped up a gear and stunned their opponents with three goals in nine minutes.
Cruz struck the post with a sweet right-foot shot from just inside the Roma box.
Crespo restored Inter's lead on 57 minutes, volleying in after Cambiasso's shot was parried by Doni.
Cruz then opened up a two-goal advantage with a low screamer from distance after receiving from Figo.
Cordoba killed off the game in the 66th, rising at the far post to power home Figo's pin-point left-wing cross.

Mancini Earns Praise For Tactics
Inter Milan coach Roberto Mancini found praise from patron Massimo Moratti for his tactics during the 4-1 win over Roma.
Mancini Praise
It has all turned around for Mancini, whose coaching skills were under the microscope as recently as ten days ago.
His decision to start with a 3-4-2-1 formation, with just Ibrahimovic up front, caught Luciano Spalletti off guard and has been one of the topics for discussion following the 4-1 win.
Roma continually failed to find the numbers to counter Inter's midfield presence, more so after going a man down, and Luciano Spalletti himself admitted that it created a problem for him.
Massimo Moratti has also come out in support of his coach.
"Was I surprised by the starting lineup, with Ibrahimovic as lone striker? I had the privilege of knowing the lineup before the match," he began, speaking to Sky Italia after the game.
"Mancini did very well. He's a coach who knows exactly what to do.
"I thought he was right to introduce two strikers in the second half when it was eleven men against ten."
Important Result
"These three points were very important," he continued. "It's a bit like last season when we came here and won against an in-form Roma.
"This is a fundamental victory for us, for the players and for our morale in general, and for Mancini who showed he's a great coach.
"Too many things said about Inter in recent weeks? To be honest, we're used to these things. The only annoying thing is the injuries.
Crespo And Cruz
"Crespo was fantastic because he scored just after coming on," opined the Inter patron. "Cruz also played very very well.
"My compliments to him, but they all played their best and I'm very happy. Congratulations. Our fans will also be happy."
Inter next host PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League on Tuesday. |

Zanetti Delighted With Inter Win
Inter captain Javier Zanetti has praised histeam-mates after the victory over PSV and believes that the threepoints were vital in order to kick-start their Champions Leaguecampaign.
The Nerazzurri made a hugely disappointing start to Group G afortnight ago after falling to a 1-0 defeat at Turkish championsFenerbahce.
Last night Inter put in a much improved performance and ZlatanIbrahimovic was the hero as he grabbed both goals in a 2-0 win. Thegame was marred however by the second-half sending offs of ChristianChivu and David Suazo.
"We showed character and personality tonight and I think we're onthe right track to continue in Europe," said Zanetti. "These are threevery important points because we lost our opener.
"The team gave a great reply tonight, playing a great match despite the many difficulties, including the sending-off of Chivu.
"Added to Chivu's dismissal is that of Suazo - this penalises usgreatly. Chivu's sending-off particularly so because of the difficultsituation in defence. Luckily we'll have Cordoba and Materazzi back forthe next matches."
Inter抯 next Champions League tie is in Russia on October 23 against CSKA Moscow. |

Cruz Doubles Up To Down Napoli
Inter Milan 2-1 Napoli
A first half brace from Julio Cruz was enough to secure a win for Inter, and send them four points clear at the top of Serie A. A late strike from substitute Roberto Sosa offered some hope to the visitors, but that was as it remained.
A dominant display from the Nerazzurri saw them pick up a deserved win against Napoli, though there was a late scare from the visitors.
Inter were on the money from teh word go, and broke through in the 20th minute, when Zlatan Ibrahimovic drew the entire Napoli defence towards him before sliding the ball for Crus, who slipped it into the corner from 10 yards out.
The second came in the 35th minute, with Cruz once again finishing crisply after chesting the ball down.
That was as it remained for much of the game, though there were quite a few chances for the Nerazzurri to wrap it up.
Their failure meant that Napoli were always within sniffing distance, and the visitors did give themselves a late chance when a header from substitute Sosa nestled into the net.
However, an alerted Inter side kept their heads about them and saw out the final six minutes and injury time to secure full points, and go four clear at the top.
First Half
This was the first meeting of these clubs at the San Siro since 2000. Inter have been on a roll as of late winning 4-1 at Roma and 2-0 in the Champions League over PSV. The game was considered a high risk for violence by authorities and only a small group of Napoli supporters made their way to Milan.
Early into the match Ibrahimovic found himself open at the top of the box as a result of some good ball movement but his effort was well over the bar.
Napoli抯 first opportunity came on the 14th minute, as the defence interrupted an Inter rush and on the counter attack a dangerous ball played I for Zalayeta was cleared last second by Chivu.
The early pressure for Inter paid off as Ibrahimovic was on the receiving end of a long ball played by Julio Cruz. Zlatan cut across the area to slide a pass past three defenders to find the unmarked Cruz who easily put the ball into the near post.
Minutes later Marek Hamsik had a shot easily saved by Julio Cesar. Inter continued to dominate play and a wonderful Ibrahimovic back heel flick on to Cruz sent him in on the goalkeeper only to have the shot stopped.
Lavezzi was by far the most dangerous player for Napoli as he dribbled past his defender to bring out a save from Julio Cesar.
Cruz again was on target in the 36th minute as he beat the offside trap to chest down a Stankovic long ball and fire a left shot into the far corner just inside the box.
Inter was running rampant now, and Cruz missed his chance at a hat trick when he received a through ball but his shot missed just inches wide of the post.
Ibrahimovic wasted a great lob over the defence as he was stooped by a stunning one hand save by goalkeeper Iezzo.
Second Half
Chivu made way for Maxwell at half time. Lavezzi continued where he left off and setup Bogliacino only to have him float one on net which was easily saved by Julio Cesar.
The Inter goalkeeper had to be on his toes as a Gargano chip came into the box but Julio Cesar did well to punch it out.
It seemed Inter were content with the scoreline and only looking for the counter attack. On the 65th minute Ibrahimovic shook off a couple defenders but his effort missed the far post. Napoli kept pushing forward and earned a free kick from 30 metres out only to have Domizzi whistle it past the post.
Some brilliant 2 way movement from Figo and Ibrahimovic found second half substitute David Suazo alone in front of goal, but his effort from 6 yards amazingly missed the net.
More pressure from Inter on the counter attack and another Inter sub, Nicolas Burdisso, headed a cross from Cesar just past the far post.
It was Napoli抯 substitute Roberto Sosa who made things interesting as he connected on a free header inside the box to make the score 2-1 with 6 minutes remaining.
The game got a little chippy in injury time as Inter continued to maintain possession resulting in Contini getting booked for a harsh foul on David Suazo. |
