Stalemate At The Milan Derby

The much-awaited Milan derby has ended in a 0-0 which satisfies neither Milan nor Inter as both teams lose ground from league-leaders Juventus.
Despite a goalless score line, the encounter was very intense and both teams played well without creating too many goal scoring opportunities.

All in all it was a balanced encounter with both sides showing signs of good football. The rossoneri played a bit better in the first half, even though the best chances fell on the feet of the nerazzurri, in particular Christian Vieri (twice) and Adriano (from a fine solo effort).

Even though controlling most of the first half, Ancelotti’s side was only able to create half chances with Hernan Crespo, Andriy Shevchenko and Kaka.

In the second half, Milan tried to create more and came very close to score the winner in the dying minutes with Ambrosini, but his shot went just high.

Inter’s forward line was well controlled by Nesta and Maldini and therefore limited the danger that Vieri and Adriano could create.

So in the end it was a fair result which however only favours Juventus who are now +5 points over Milan and +8 over Inter.

The beautiful game is made up of many elements, the main ones being the players, the coaches, the management, and the fans. However, while the first three are the focus of the traditional football media, the fans are almost always left out of the picture – except when protagonists of riots, racist or abusive chanting, pitch invasions, protests and other negative manifestations of delinquency or discontent.
At Goal.com we don’t think this is totally fair. Football is a fan’s game. It’s often about anger, yes; but it’s also about humour. About agony and ecstasy, joy and despair, triumph and humiliation. Mostly it’s about stoicism and loyalty in the face of overwhelming evidence that your team is anything but championship material. It’s about blind faith and optimism, and the certain knowledge that however bad things get, your deadly rivals are the saddest bunch on the planet.

Football would be nothing without fans’ support and passion. Imagine what a football game would be like with an entire stadium of empty seats. Sad is the right word. Even a fantastic overhead kick by Ronaldinho, a majestic volley by Zidane, or a lethal strike by Shevchenko would lose much of its mystique and emotion if the fans weren’t there to celebrate with their heroes. Or the opposition fans weren’t there to groan at the damage inflicted on their team while grudgingly admiring such players’ skills.

So what we intend to do here at Goal.com is give fans their rightful place in the football spectrum. And what better way to do this than through images and videos depicting the passion, colour, and lifestyle of fans from around the globe.

Among some samples we inlcuded in the related link below this article we included a shot of a banner sent to us by a Roma fan. The banner was displayed during the recent Roma-Inter game. It reads ‘Frisk Dacci Il Resto’ which in English means ‘Frisk, Give Us Back The Change’, in obvious reference to the incident that befell the Swedish referee at the end of the first half of the champions league clash between the Giallorossi and Dynamo Kiev.

The banner encapsulates that dry, not to say black, humour that fans everywhere can identify with. It shouldn’t be seen as an attack on Frisk, but rather as a way of relieving the tension – of taking some of the drama from an incident which - compared with other things going on in the world - is not that serious.

Anyone can participate in this new initiative by sending an e-mail to you@goal.com with suitable images. These can range from witty banners, eye-catching flags or an impressive choreography, to scenes from outside the stadiums that convey the pre- or post-match atmosphere.

We’re also encouraging you to send us encoded videos for windows media player that depict fans singing, or a fan choreography, or scenes from outside the stadiums that convey to other football fans around the world what it’s like being a fan of your team.

We won’t be publishing any scenes of violence or criminal activity, so please don’t bother to send those in. This is intended to be a positive feature – ideally a humorous one - so we won’t be focusing on the negative messages that a minority of fans sometimes express. And for legal reasons we are unable to use images that depict the pitch or players in action, or images taken by third parties without their prior consent.

But that still leaves a whole range of fans’ experiences on which to draw. How often after a great match have you said to someone: “You should have been there” or “You should have seen us”? Now you can show us…all of us.

MILAN - Sunday evening's 'derby della Madonnina' between AC Milan and Inter finished in a goalless draw. The result sees the Nerazzurri move up to sixth place in the table, eight points behind current leaders Juventus after seven matches and still unbeaten both at home and in Europe.

Christian Vieri was presented with two good chances in the opening period of a pulsating first half. Put through by Emre, the Nerazzurri number thirty-two fired at Dida, then shot wide of the left post after showing superb ball control to bring down Materazzi's long ball forward and turn Nesta. The Rossoneri were at their most dangerous from counter-attacks, and Alberto Fontana pulled off crucial saves to deny Crespo and Shevchenko before the break.

Nerazzurri custodian Fontana was among the protagonists in a less spectacular second half characterised by the high number of fouls. He anticipated Crespo to a Kaka cross, then caught a Shevchenko header to keep AC Milan at bay. Inter's best chances of the second period fell to Stankovic, who narrowly missed the target with two long-range efforts.

Inter are back in Serie A action this Wednesday evening with a match away to Lecce.
