L鰓: The Result Flattered Us
German trainer Joachim L鰓 was forced to admit that the 3-0 victory achieved by his side over Austria in Vienna was more than perhaps they deserved after a disappointing performance.
In the Ernst-Happel Stadion, the Euro 2008 co-hosts were by far the better side in the opening 45 minutes and really should have had a goal for their efforts.
As it was a goal from Thomas Hitzlsperger eight minutes after the restart got the Germans back into the game and they bagged a further two from Miroslav Klose and Mario Gomez as the home side pressed forward looking for a goal of their own.
揟he win was of course positive for us, but the result was too high |

Lell Adds To Bayern抯 Injury Woe BayernMunich are facing a lengthening injury list ahead of their top of thetable Bundesliga clash with Werder Bremen next weekend. Christian Lellis the latest worry that Ottmar Hitzfeld has for the match.
Aftertaking a three point lead over near rivals Werder Bremen over theweekend with their win over Hansa Rostock, Bayern have been rocked withthe news that Franck Rib閞y is all but out of the game, while defenderLucio is a major doubt.
To make matters worse, Christian Lell has now joined the ranks ofthe walking wounded and put a big question mark over his availabilityfor the Allianz Arena clash.
With twelve Bayern players away on international duty, the danger is that more could return to join this list.
Franck Rib閞y is out for around three weeks with a hamstring injury, while Lucio is a major concern after pulling out of the Brazil squaddue to an achilles injury.
Christian Lell is now suffering with the flu, and is the third major doubt for trainer Ottmar Hitzfeld.
There is some positive news for the Bavarians though, with theannouncement that Marcell Jansen has made a return to training for thefirst time in two-and-a-half months after suffering ankle ligamentdamage.

Germany Unconvincing Despite 3-0 Win Austria 0 Germany 3
A 3-0 win for Germany didn't tell the whole story of the match as theAustrians gave them a real game. A goal early in the second half from aThomas Hitzlsperger strike put the Germans in front, before Klose andGomez added two more.

JoachimL鰓 will be an unsatisfied man despite a 3-0 win in Vienna againstAustria. The home side were aggressive and resolute during the firsthalf and were clearly the better side, with the Ernst-Happelstadium crowd enjoying what they were seeing.
However, the Germans went 1-0 up thanks to a Thomas Hitzlspergerstrike after 53 minutes. Two more goals from Miroslav Klose andsubstitute Mario Gomez made the game safe, but will not stop thecriticism of their overall performance.
Bundestrainer Joachim L鰓 handed a debut to Schalke抯 HeikoWestermann, who started at right back. Manuel Friedrich replaced theinjured Christophe Metzelder, while both Michael Ballack and BerndSchneider were recalled after lengthy spells out injured. KevinKuranyi got the nod to partner Miroslav Klose in attack.
Joseph Hickersberger recalled Emanuel Pogatetz from hisinternational exile, while there were also starts for Werder Bremen'sMartin Harnik and Bundesliga newcomer Sebastian Prodl.
First Half
Austria came out of the traps very quickly and went on the attackfrom the very outset. Fuchs dribbled straight at Heiko Westermanntargeting the debutant from the very start. His shot from 20 metersflew wide of the goal however.
The home side were aggressive and full of running and were findingit easy to disrupt the German抯 rhythm and stop them building up anymomentum. Joseph Hickersberger抯 side managed to switch defence toattack and were causing the Germans problems.
On 10 minutes, Harnik broke down the right and squared the ball toIvanschitz, who was tackled at the last minute by the alertness ofHeiko Westermann.
Germany抯 first chance arrived from the head of Michael Ballackafter he got on the end of a Bernd Schneider free kick. His effortflew over causing Alex Manninger no problems.
Austria were still the more impressive side and continued to pressforward and cause Germany difficulties with Ivanschitz lookingparticularly impressive.
The most dangerous moment in the first half arrived on 22 minuteswith Harnik breaking down the right. Keeper Jens Lehmann came out alittle slowly and was rounded by the Werder Bremen player. Fouled byManuel Friedrich, the referee played an advantage when the ball ran toRoland Linz. His shot however was cleared by Mertesacker.
On the half hour mark, Austria created yet another good chance whenIvanschitz sent in Fuchs on the left. Lehmann did well to save withhis feet. The rest of the half was played out in the midfield areawith Germany trying to use Schweinsteiger down the right but to littleavail.
Second Half
Neither side made any changes at half time, at the second periodbegan much like the first had progressed with Austria on top. Ivanschitz beat Friedrich well before feeding Standfest, who fired wellover.
They were then made to rue all their missed chances when Germanytook a surprise lead. Schneider played the ball into the run of Westermann, whose cross into the centre was only partially cleared. Thomas Hitzlsperger was on hand to fire in the loose ball to put theaway side in front.
Austria very nearly equalised immediately, but Harnik saw his shotparried by Lehmann and Linz was unable to steer the rebound home.
Ten minutes after the first goal and Germany bagged a second throughMiroslav Klose. Hitzlsperger sent Ballack racing down the left beatingthe offside trap in the process. His square ball to the middle pickedout Klose well and the Bayern striker converted easily from closerange.
Although still fighting, the game had slipped away from Austria, which was a shame considering their first half display. A number ofsubstitutions changed the complexion of the two teams, but it was twoof Germany抯 newcomers that combined for the third goal.
Podolski crossed for Gomez and the Stuttgart striker headed in wellpast Manninger to put a more comprehensive look on the scoreline thanthe German抯 performance perhaps warranted.

Bundesliga - Team news: Bremen boosted Eurosport - Fri, 08 Feb 14:22:00 2008
Second-placed Werder Bremen hope that striker Aaron Hunt, defender Petri Pasanen and midfielder Tim Borowski will all recover in time for Sunday's clash with leaders Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena.

The three players were all back in training on Thursday andwould be important additions to a squad that will definitely be withoutthe injured Clemens Fritz and Sebastian Boenisch, plus suspended Brazilian centre back Naldo.
Werder will fall six points behind Bayern if they lose on Sunday.
Bayern will be hit by the absence of midfield magician Franck Ribery because of a hamstring problem but captain Oliver Kahn is confident the Frenchman will not be missed too much.
"He'san important player but we have so much quality and potential in thesquad that even without him we can play at the highest level," Kahntold reporters this week.
There is another clash between twotitle candidates this weekend, when fourth-placed Hamburg SV look for afirst win in five league games away to third-placed Bayer Leverkusen onSaturday.
Leverkusen have three-quarters of their first-choice defence missing in Gonzalo Castro, who is suspended, Hans Sarpei, who has not yet returned from the African Nations Cup, and the injured Karim Haggui.
Hamburg coach Huub Stevens will be worrying about the fitness of Vincent Kompany, after the Belgian defender returned from international duty this weekwith a thigh problem. Nigel de Jong stands by to replace him ifnecessary.
Schalke have a chance to settle a score when they play away to Borussia Dortmund in Sunday's Ruhr derby.
Schalke'ssurprise 2-0 defeat by Dortmund on the penultimate day of last seasoncost them the title but if they are to get revenge they will have to doso without chief striker Kevin Kuranyi, suspended after he picked up afifth yellow card last weekend.
