Japanese singers win prestigious U.S. gospel competition

Wednesday 23rd June, 10:22 AM JST

NEW YORK —

A group of U.S.-based Japanese singers has won a prestigious gospel competition recently held in the United States, becoming the first-ever Japanese to win the event, the group’s representative said Tuesday.

The Harlem Japanese Gospel Choir won the choir division of McDonald’s Gospelfest at the Prudential Center, New Jersey last Saturday, Kimiko Matsuo said.

The event is one of the biggest of its kind in the country. Known for the high quality of entrants, about 40,000 people enter auditions and some of the award winners become professional singers.

The Japanese group passed an audition in January and won the main event with its rendition of a hymn, ‘‘How Great Is Our God,’’ according to Matsuo.

Gospel, a type of religious music developed by African-Americans, is popular in Japan, where some fan clubs have been formed.

The group was established in 1997 by Tommy Tomita, a Japanese native who has been showing tourists around Harlem for more than two decades. About 20 members—including homemakers, office workers and students—gather weekly in Harlem to practice.

‘‘To be honest, I am surprised that we won,’’ Matsuo said. ‘‘We did practice very hard, but being a Japanese group singing gospel is unusual and may have helped,’’ she said.

Final Call for Oshio Manabu
June 23, 2010

A date has been set for what will probably be the final trial of Oshio Manabu (32). The former actor has been arrested several times since August of last year, and in November he received a suspended prison sentence for drug use. But he was rearrested in January for his involvement in the related death of a Ginza hostess is more likely to lead to actual prison time. Tanaka Kaori was found dead and naked in a luxury Tokyo apartment on August 2 and Oshio and his manager later admitted that they had failed to seek medical help for three hours after Tanaka passed out from the use of MDMA (ecstasy). Prosecutors have insisted that there was an 80% chance of saving her life if a doctor had been called to the scene quickly.

At the Tokyo District Court yesterday, it was announced that Oshio's trial would be held on September 3 and that a verdict would be handed down on September 17, which will be his eighth court appearance. Nihon University Law School professor Itakura Hiroshi commented, "I think prosecutors will ask for a 10-year prison sentence, and he will get about 8." Oshio, currently occupying a 3-tatami mat cell in a Tokyo detention center, will be the first celebrity to have his fate decided by a citizen jury.

Anna Tsuchiya, PE'Z collaborate on special project
Tue, June 22, 2010 (11:29am EDT)

Anna Tsuchiya and instrumental jazz band PE'Z are working together on a collaborative release, set to go on sale on August 19. This will not be a typical product, as it is being produced by Takarajimasha, an entertainment company that primarily deals with magazines.

Last December, Takarajimasha experimented with a collaborative project between Quruli and Yuming. Titled "Shirt wo Araeba," the CD was bundled with previously unreleased photos and a special booklet featuring self-drawn illustrations. Due to the positive sales of that project, Takarajimasha was encouraged to try another music release.

Although the title has not yet been revealed, several details of the Anna Tsuchiya x PE'Z collaboration are known. The product will be packaged in an A4 magazine size box, containing a CD, a music video DVD, and a special commemorative pouch produced by the popular select shop RAGTAG. Like "Shirt wo Araeba," the bundle will be sold at bookstores and convenience stores rather than at record shops.

Takarajimasha also has the backing of J-WAVE, which will host a one-time-only live performance by Anna Tsuchiya and PE'Z at this year's J-WAVE LIVE 2000+10 festival, taking place at the Yoyogi National Gymnasium on August 13-15.

In addition, Takarajimasha is openly recruiting 300 fans to participate in the filming of the music video that will be included on the DVD. Filming will take place somewhere in Tokyo on June 28.

The single's B-side will be an instrumental guitar cover of Crystal King's "Ai wo Torimodose!!," which was used as the first theme song of the "Fist of the North Star" anime series in 1984. In addition, the single's CD jacket will feature an original illustration by "Fist of the North Star" mangaka Tetsuo Hara.

Although the single will go on sale in August, the "STILL ALIVE" song was released as a chaku-uta this week.

Kotaro Koizumi, Saki Fukuda co-star in BeeTV drama
Tue, June 22, 2010 (7:48pm EDT)

Kotaro Koizumi (31) and Saki Fukuda (19) are co-starring in a new mobile drama titled "Himitsu no Kankei ~Sensei wa Doukyonin~," starting distribution on July 1 through BeeTV.

Described as a love comedy, the story has Fukuda playing a high school student whose parents die, leaving her with no other relatives. She begins living with her homeroom teacher (Koizumi), leading to an odd lifestyle for both of them.

Koizumi and Fukuda worked together once before in the 2006 drama series "Fushin no Toki," but they hardly appeared in the same scenes, so this will be their first true co-acting experience. Other cast members include Eriko Sato (28), Akiyoshi Nakao (21), and Sei Hiraizumi (66).

TOKYO —

A private showing of the Hollywood remake of director Yoji Yamada’s 1977 classic “Kofuku no Kiiroi Handkerchief” was held in Tokyo this week, with a guest appearance by actress Kaori Momoi.

Yamada, who was also in attendance, said of the film, “Years have past since I made the original but the story still invokes deep emotions.” Momoi also looked back fondly on what she says was her first major work, but joked about the lapse of time by mistaking character names.

The remake, “Yellow Handkerchief,” stars William Hurt, Maria Bello and Kristen Stewart. It will open June 26.

AKB48 hopeful Atsuki Ishiguro missed the cut, or possibly dismissed
Wed, June 23, 2010 (10:04am EDT)

Nikkan Sports is reporting that Atsuki Ishiguro (16) was dropped from AKB48's kenkyuusei for breaking the group's policy against dating. Earlier this month, a picture of her and a boy taken in a photo booth was leaked onto the internet.

The photo was leaked during the voting period of AKB48's most recent "senbatsu" election, which determined the lineup for the group's next single. On June 9, the senbatsu results were announced, and Ishiguro was revealed to be #40, giving her the final spot in the 19-member "under girl" unit that will record the single's B-side. At the time, Ishiguro was still just a candidate for the official Team Kenkyuusei.

On June 12, AKB48's Team Kenkyuusei selection process took place, and the results were announced on June 20. Despite being popular enough to make the cut in the senbatsu, she was one of three girls who failed the selection - the other two were Momoko Kinumoto (15) and Sara Fujimoto (13). At the same time, another kenkyuusei member, Eri Takamatsu (17), left the group on her own.

According to Nikkan Sports, Ishiguro failed the selection because of the photo. A source familiar with the situation said that it was unfortunate because the photo seems to be old, implying that Ishiguro is not currently dating. There is even speculation that the photo may have been taken before Ishiguro joined the group of kenkyuusei candidates this past September, but there has been no confirmation of that. Still, AKB48's no-dating policy is strictly enforced, evidenced by the previous dismissal of Ayaka Kikuchi (16) in 2008. A separate source explained that the management has no choice but to set an example for the many other members.

It was not made clear whether someone will replace Ishiguro in the "under girls" for the upcoming single, which goes on sale on August 18.

Here's looking at Yu, kid

By Chris Betros

TOKYO —

It’s rare to go a week without seeing Yu Yamada’s face on a billboard, in a TV commercial, on a fashion magazine cover, in a TV drama or singing at a concert.

Her latest venture is the TV Asahi series “Eri on the Edge – A Story about Money,” in which she plays the lead role of Eriko, a down-on-her-luck, penniless woman. The drama, which starts in July, is based on manga artist Rieko Saibara’s irreverent children’s book, “The All-Important Story of Money,” which describes how the main character overcomes hardship to find success.

Born into a poor household in Kochi Prefecture, Eriko is eventually accepted at an art college in Tokyo. However, troubled with debt, Eriko’s father (Takanori Jinnnai) attempts to end the family’s suffering by crashing the family car with everyone inside. Surviving the crash with her mother, Eriko’s luck takes a further turn for the worse when a debt collector grabs the family’s possessions. On the brink of giving up her dreams of college, Eriko is finally able to journey to Tokyo with her mother’s help. The impoverished Eriko is a departure from Yamada’s normally stylish image.

Yamada said she has always liked to challenge herself. When she was 11, she entered the same Okinawa acting and singing school that singers Namie Amuro and Speed attended. In 1999, she made her singing debut with the group y’z factory. Following the group’s break up, Yamada moved to television, making her acting debut in the 2001 drama series “Kabachitare!” One year later, she was offered modeling work by top fashion magazine CanCam and was soon walking the red carpet at gala events and is still a regular at the popular Tokyo Girls Collection each year.

Standing 170 cms tall, she seems to have inherited much of her good looks from her mother, Mikako Yamada, a former JAL flight attendant, beauty contest winner and fashion model with 20 years in the business. In a rare project, Yamada and her mother appeared in a photo spread together in VoCE magazine a few years ago.

Yamada is now one of the most in-demand celebrities for product endorsements, having fronted for Tokyo Metro, Kanebo, Vodafone, Nissin, Canon, Fujitsu and Ezaki Glico and Shu Uemura. When Yamada did the ball exercise in the Glico apple yogurt TV commercial, children who saw it mimicked her and it became a sort of phenomenon. Most recently, Yamada took over from Chiaki Kuriyama as the campaign girl for Uniqlo’s popular bra-tops. “I was a little bit embarrassed doing those commercials because I had to appear naked on camera from the back up,” she admitted. “But the styles are great. I feel like they could empower a woman to be perfect.”

Yamada, who confessed to being a shopaholic, said: “It’s good for stress, or for when I want to reward myself. I love clothes more than anything else.”

Amid her varied activities, Yamada is constantly the subject of media gossip about her love life. One magazine recently ran a feature story on who would be the next CanCam alumni to get married after Yuri Ebihara—Yu Yamada or Moe Oshikiri? Yamada has had an on-again-off-again relationship with actor Shun Oguri, 27, with whom she went to Hawaii earlier this year.

When Yamada made her debut as the new beauty adviser for cosmetics brand Shu Uemura, she was supposed to be promoting the company’s new UV Under Base Mousse foundation product, but the reporters were more interested in her love life. She said they like to play golf and just relax together, but denied any marriage plans yet. “I want to get married some time, but right now, I’d like to focus on my work.” But when asked if Oguri is the one she’d like to tie the knot with, Yamada smiled and said, “Maybe. I’ll leave it up to your imagination.”

Jackson estate says documentary to debut in Japan 'misled' fans

Friday 25th June, 05:44 AM JST

LOS ANGELES —

The estate of Michael Jackson is taking issue with a documentary that is to debut in Japan on the anniversary of the pop star’s death on Friday.

Most of the footage in the film was shot by Marc Schaffel, a former business partner who had a major falling out with Jackson in a messy trial in which they sued each other four years ago.

In a statement sent to The Associated Press on Thursday, the estate says the film’s promoters “misled Michael Jackson’s fans” by making it appear as if it were authorized.

“Nothing could be further from the truth,” the estate said. “His estate was not consulted on this film, and will not endorse it.”

The estate said none of the proceeds will flow to the estate, which benefits his children, mother and charities. It also said the movie cannot legally use any of Jackson’s music.

Schaffel’s lawyer, Howard King, said Thursday that his client had licensed footage that Schaffel either shot himself or hired a crew to take for the film’s producer, Flamingo Features. He said Schaffel did not represent any endorsement from the estate.

“Marc Schaffel could not have been more clear about the lack of involvement of the estate,” King said in an interview.

Schaffel provided footage from 2003 including of Jackson’s birthday party at his sprawling Neverland Ranch, and was in Tokyo for the premiere with Jackson’s ex-wife, Debbie Rowe, King said.

King said the Japanese distributor, a company called Star Sands, may have mistakenly been promoting the film as authorized, but he said advertisements were being changed early Friday.

“What I believe is that Star Sands advertised the movie as being endorsed by the estate without knowing the truth,” he said. “I believe they are currently changing their advertising, now that they have become aware of the estate’s claim.”

Flamingo Features is a Los Angeles-based company that rents production offices on the lot of Viacom Inc.‘s movie studio, Paramount Pictures.

Shaye Sullwold, one of the producers on the documentary and Flamingo Features’s co-chair, on Thursday denied misleading Star Sands about the estate’s involvement.

She also said Paramount was not involved. A Paramount spokesman declined to comment immediately.

“We’ve never said anything about the estate endorsing anything,” Sullwold said.

Yokohama Court Stops Anti-Cove Protests
June 25, 2010

The Yokohama District Court has placed a restraining order on right-wingers protesting

against controversial Hollywood documentary The Cove. The court issued a decision

temporarily forbidding the Tokyo-based group (not named in stories but widely known

to be Shuken Kaifuku wo Mezasu Kai) from staging its noisy protests outside or within

100m of the Yokohama New Theater. Members of the group are also forbidden to enter

the cinema without the permission of its management.

According to Unplugged, the Japanese distributor of the movie, the decision is effective

as of June 24. A spokesperson for the company said, "It is a natural decision, as the

protests to stop the screening of this movie are malicious. There are no plans to

change the screening schedule." The Yokohama cinema is one of six that recently

announced they would screen the Academy Award-winning movie from July 3.

Controversy surrounding the movie peaked over the last two weeks during a

promotional visit to Japan by Ric O'Barry, the dolphin activist at the center of the

movie. The documentary portrays the annual slaughter of thousands of dolphins in the

small fishing town of Taiji, Wakayama Prefecture and the sale for consumption of the

dolphin meat though it contains dangerously high levels of mercury and other toxins.

While extremists have claimed that the movie is an attack on Japanese culture, O'Barry

has repeatedly stressed that neither he nor the movie are anti-Japan, and that the

Japanese people are entitled to see the movie and decide for themselves.

Thu, June 24, 2010 (8:44am EDT)

Freelance announcer and newscaster Maoko Kotani (45) has been divorced since two years ago, it was recently learned. Thursday's issue of Shukan Shincho first broke the news.

This is Kotani's second divorce. She first married a jewelry designer in 1993 and gave birth to a daughter before they separated in 2001.

In April 2007, she remarried with Yasuaki Ishizaka (53), the head of the Japan office of auction house Sotheby's. According to Shukan Shincho, they began living separately less than six months later, and they officially divorced after about a year of marriage.

Kotani's agency said that it could not comment at this time, due to her manager's absence.
