How to talk to a celebrity
Me, flanked by Nora Danish and her mother
Before you get any wrong idea, let me clarify, I am not related to Nora Danish by blood, neither by work, nor by any close friendships.
This picture was taken just like a fan-meet-star way: I politely went to her and nervously requested, "Erm, can I take a picture with you?'
This picture was taken in her house in Ampang, during the pre-birthday celebration of her son, Rayqal. I was invited yes, mainly for a rekindling of complicated family ties I guess (I am the stepmum of Nora's niece/nephew) .
After 3 and half years of stepmothering the Danishes, I finally received an opportunity to meet eye-to-eye with this high-profile celebrity. Was I nervous when I received the invitation? Hell yes. Too nervous that I decided I won't be attending. It wasn't ego. It was just this vibe that I won't fit in.
Being an at-home editor,my life is far from the glamourous life of Nora's. I don't need to get my hair done (in fact, I don't even comb everyday) and nobody will notice the worn-and-torn-out rubber of my cheap slippers.
But I did attend, due respect to Nora's mother, who was my husband's then mother-in-law. Nora's mum reminded about the gathering a day before. To ease my nerves, I referred to this one chapter of Leil Lowdes 2003 best seller, How to Talk to Anyone.
This is Lowdes's guide on how to talk to a celebrity"
1. Don't immediately ask for a picture
2. Maintain cool and don't slobber at first sight of them. Smile and nod. That's all.
3. If you must take a picture, make sure that the celebrity is ready for it and is not in the middle of doing something.
4. If you must talk to her, say something like this, "Miss X, I just want to tell you how much pleasure your wonderful films have given me". And make sure you mention her most recent film, not a memory that's getting yellow in her scrapbook.
5. Most importantly, match her mood. Use body language to catch if she's ready to be approached.
So, equipped with this knowledge, I braved my way to her house, memorizing the above tips along the way like a kid would to an examination hall.
I parked my car in front of Nora's condo, and took a deep breath and "pretentiously classy" steps towards her entrance. Immediately I saw her --fair, kind looking, without makeup and with hijab on. She is a lot prettier in person than on screen.
I was nervous (calmly telling myself, smile and nod...smile and nod...smile and nod).
My eyes catched Nora's and with all warmth, she stretched her hands as a host to salam me. I didn't remember what she murmured because I was too nervous. I guess it was something like , "Haa, jumpa jugak"
The warmest was definitely her mother, who in her every effort, tried to make me feel comfortable mingling with the family. I was alone, unaccompanied, plain, trapped between posh people who smelled of genuine leather. I only had a phone in my hand, and donned in black abaya with brown long shawl. No make up. That's all.
Another person that took me by surprise was who else -- the birthday boy himself. Nora's son was amazingly friendly to guests. Merely 10 minutes of knowing me, he started to sport some magic tricks he knew to me.
In short, Nora's family was a friendly and warm batch, together with her sister, Nadia, who was all smile whenever she passed me. Nora was nice to my son, Suraqah, and had no qualms about having to run after my "missing" son a couple of times.
In the end, I forgot all about Lowdes's tips (although they all apply). I think the best way to talk to a celebrity is to approach her as someone with a profession as significant as yours. This means that we acknowledge that although we are not a star, we make important contributions too and deserved to be respected by well, the stars. It also means that we respect their profession by appreciating that their family time is the time they want to think away from work.
Anyway, I did ask for a snap, just before I left -- the Lowdes way of course.
